The same principle applies. I used gold as my example because I'm not a silver investor, however I enjoy collecting old silver coins which are not dependant on spot prices. If you are bullish on silver as I am on gold, then you would accumlate systematically over time. If you are bearish then you will try to pick tops and bottoms.

@baseball JM and Engelhard bars Mostly art bars, bank bars, and poured bars, I average around $300 for the 5oz poured bars on ebay. |

I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT INVESTING PER SE I AM JUST TRYING TO UNDERSTAND FROM EXPERIENCE PEOPLE THE INTERACTION BETWEEN SPOT SILVER PRICES AND PREMIUMS IN RELATION TO HIGHER PREMIUM ITEMS. Personally for me if I want to talk about PM investing it will deal with AGE, ASE, SLV and SGOL and I sold all my PM ETFs a couple weeks ago and not looking to re-enter especially gold which I personally believe isn't bottomed. |

Relax, starbux! I think it's obvious that English is not wjl's first language and he simply doesn't understand what you are talking about.
With regard to premiums, my experience is that any bullion coin with a high premium is treated more as a "collectible" and less as bullion. Therefore, the price isn't likely to drop very much as the price of silver drops. I'm not talking about items with $4-5 premiums, of course, like Pandas or Britannias. Those will certainly cost less now that prices have dropped, although the premiums will likely go up a bit to compensate. For example, goldmart was selling Canadian Maple Leafs and Austrian Philharmonics with a premium of $2.09 as of last week, but the premium is now $2.39. Still, not bad when you consider the price of silver has dropped nearly $2.

Thanks Barry that is the exact type of information I was looking for. The question was spurred by noticing the price of 5 and 10 oz. Lunar Series II coins dropping with the price of silver.

I think it a great idea to buy very high premium items right now this minute if you are worried about the near term downside. However, you will be giving up gains upon market recovery. Thats the price for safety and it all has to do with what is off topic. Gain a little knowledge about how the market works.

Anybody that tries to jump in pmz and sell instantly and hope to make and instant profit beyond eBays 13% if they chose to sell there for example is totally dillusional.....
PMz are clearly a LONG TERM investment. Mark you cost on each piece, toss it in the safe and forget about it for 20 years if you can afford to, if not move into something else....
And all it would take is a good swing in world events (war) to change that downswing by the way in a nano second, no one knows where the future will go, Wiji-board or anybody else, lol....
And the "I told ya so" of the world made a prediction equal to guessing heads or tales. Big deal, any fool can call heads or tales and list 87 examples of why they were right and everyone else was wrong. And yet not one example have a single impact on why things went the direction they did. No one human brain can comprehend all that goes into the system....

Why shut this thread down, this is a GREAT thread.. I was going to do a similar thread running down some silver and gold premium pieces to hunt down.
Now first I want to say, if you are going to buy, if you must, only nibble a tad. NOW-
I would go after the pandas, gold and silver for my collection. They are coming down in price, the BU ones that is, such as the 2013's. ... and yet they are higher than say the Silver Eagles and Maples. So pick at the higher end ones that will have less to fall and will rebound faster for their premium.
I would also look at the Wildlife series from Canada, shoot buy a roll of Wood Bison if you can't control yourself.
Then, pick up some Kooks.
Finally, look for proof silver and gold coins and see if they have come down in price.
To sum it up... yes this drop in silver is a GREAT time to look for high premium silver and gold coins.

I am still trying to get a handle on coins v bullion. But I do know that you do not buy your coins from the Australian Mints. If it is possible as there mark up in prices is out of control.
Now that I have made my post as a newbie to coins I would like to add to the side issue on this thread as well as it shakes the very foundation of our forums.
It is very important for members to have a family attitude on CCF & SCF.
I have never been belittled by anyone since I joined on the 2.5.2010 and I would like to think that anybody could ask me anything on my specialist thread (or anywhere else) that was started on 2.7.2010 and has 26319 views and 417 posts. I treat the simplest and out of touch posts with great respect and encourage all comers to post on any thread.
There is no such thing on CCF & SCF that members are different groups from the upper class to the lower class when it comes to posting. All efforts need to take place to continue the family attitude on our forums. As this is why they are so successful.

I bought some high premium coins in imho, please tell me if I got a deal or not. 2011 Canadian polar bear $ 30.00 1986 American liberty dollar Proof $50.00 2011 Australian koala reverse proof $ 40.00 2005 Canadian maple leaf (3 leafs) reverse proof $40.00 2009 Canadian maple leaf reverse proof privey mark $40.00 2010 Canadian maple leaf Vancouver $40.00 1982 Krugerrand commemorate $20.00 10 American Ike dollar's (not silver) $10.00 will most likely hand them out to friends kids, just to get some of them interested in coins. First time at local coin show today, nervous but loved it. |

Hi cderksen. Sounds like the fun & general experience you had at that coin show was very much worth the time, effort & money. Really enjoyed your bit about buying some item as hand out for your friends kids. When it comes to the how much are the coins you purchased are worth I would turn to ebay and see what is happening with the coin selling there. I find ebay extremely good to get a feel for prices before I buy these days. Some of my bulk buys have taken many years to know what to buy them at but single items are a lot easier to research their current selling price. All The Best. kg5 |

Speaking of high premiums, I was just checking the price of $20 St. Gaudens Gold Double Eagles at APMEX. They are currently selling them at $1,588 ($1,636 if paid by credit card). They're stated "buy price," however, is only $1,436. That's quite the spread, and I don't see it changing anytime soon. |
