1972 was the first year that the BOK made the 50 won coin and it is especially collectible these days for that reason. This coin in UNC can go from $40~$100+ depending on the different levels of UNC condition. This one is especially beautiful and will probably fetch towards the higher end of that range. |

The 72 10W will probably come back UNC details because of that big scratch. 1972 10W isn't worth anything in MS anyway minus top pop. |

I am looking for lots of Korean cash coins of any condition, size, variety, and amount.
The Korean cash coins I am looking to purchase include the Joseon Dynasty Sangpyeong Tongbo, as well as the Cash Coins of the Goryeo Dynasty (Haedong Tong/Jungbo, Dongguk Tong/Jungbo, and Samhan Tong/Jungbo).
I am particularly interested in buying big lots of these coins at a good bulk price per coin and would only like to pick up onesies/twosies if they are rare. I know there are a few lots on eBay, but these sellers are trying to sell them for 10~100 times their value in some cases.
The reason is I am a fanatic for collecting these coins and am currently writing a Numismatic Review on Goryeo/Joseon Dynasty cash coins. So, I need all the examples I can get.
Thanks in advance!

This is a Bank of Joseon(Chosen) 1 Yen/Won banknote. These were printed beginning on January 4, 1932. So, its not 1921 as the title or other comment suggests.
In fact, there were no bills for use in Korea that were printed beginning in 1921, so I'm not sure where that year came from. The bills that were printed in 1919/1920 look completely different from this.
The bill you have pictured is during the Japanese occupation of Korea and as the kanji/hanja says on the bottom center of the bill, it was printed within Japan for use in Joseon/Korea. These are normally in very torn up/circulated condition, so it is definitely a keeper. :) |

@Lucky, No these are three of the more common mints. However the "medium-types" are a little more expensive than the others. You may be looking at $10~$15 for the whole lot. Common 1 Mun coins are $1~2, the Seoul Charity 2 Mun is mayyybe $2, the medium types are a little more. |

Sorry I just saw this post. Also, please only refer to Primal Trek for as a reference. That site is filled with inaccuracies, especially dates and some of the specific mints. This site is the most accurate and uses Korean sources that the Korean numismatic societies and collecting community recognize: https://www.koreancoinlookup.com/sa...eong-tong-bo
These are indeed Korean cash coins. The top middle is a 2 Mun from the Seoul Charity Office (1679), top left is a "Medium-type" (2) Mun cash coins from the Special Military Unit (1742), the top right is a Training Command medium-type 2 Mun coin (also 1742), bottom #1, #3, and #4 are General Military Office mint 1 Mun coins (1757), and the bottom #2 is a Department of Treasure mint 1 Mun (1731) |

Quote: I just saw 100 won on ebay, which already has a bid of more than $ 600. Is this a rare coin? Is the market in Korea starting to grow ? Should we stock up on coins as XF-MS ? I recently purchased 1 won of 1966, 1967 AU and was surprised when I saw how much such coins go for on eBay.
Don't take this the wrong way, but you don't seem to understand Korean coins. 1970 is the very first year of the 100 Won coin, ever. So yes, it is intrinsically rare, but especially rare in MS. You should have been stocking up on this and other rare Korean coins for a long time. Right now is a great time to sell with the prices. The 1966 1W is also a another expensive one, but the 1967 1W isn't worth much.
Quote: I don't understand these comments.
The "prices" on that NGC values page are not updated and do not consider the markets where the coins are from. We are also talking about MS state coins, not circulated stuff; which is worth nothing most of the time. |

Quote: My question regarding Korean coins in general is why are the older coins from the 1890s-1900s so valuable?
This is easy to answer. The intrinsic value of these (and all) coins is driven by rarity and quality. There are a number of 1890~1900s coins that are nearly unobtainable. A good majority of them were minted in Japan, then taken by Japan during occupation and then melted, and then taken/melted by the US after WW2. So the number of surviving extreme rarities are very, very low.
Even for less rare, finding very high MS specimens is very hard and thus, make them worth more money. |

Short answer, yes. Modern and Bank of Korea coins in MS state have become ridiculously expensive over the last five years. Some of them increase in price by 600% to 700%. Ebay has also made it easy for foreign buyers to purchase things from US sellers, so the prices go even higher because there are more bidders.
The 1998 Mint set has gone from $1500 in 2015/16 to $5,000 just recently. The 1970 100 won has gone from a $200 coin in MS to over $1,000 in very high grades. More recently one sold for $2,300 on eBay. There are more collectors in Korea now as well. An XF 1981 100 won used to cost $15 on eBay; now they are well over $100. With more information on YouTube to aid the hobby and COVID-19 keeping everyone indoors, more and more are getting into or getting back into the hobby.
A big part of it is that there are more buyers and people are finally realizing the value of rare Korean coins in high MS state. |
