Both .999 and .9999 are regarded as 24k or pure gold John. The difference between the two is one has been assayed to a higher standard and determined to have 9,999/10,0000 parts gold whereas the other is only (at least) 9,990/10,000 parts gold.
To convert karat to purity simply divide whatever the nominated karat is by 24 .... so 22k is .9167 purity, 18k = .7500 purity and so on.

ryanklaus - my advice would be to sift advice carefully, truth is nobody knows where prices are going irrespective of how forceful they are in their assertions and/or dismissive of opposing views. If you are buying for the purposes of building a collection then buy what pleases your eye at whatever you believe is a fair price at the time, if buying for more of an investment purpose I'd say always remember it is your money and ultimately your decision on what and when to buy as you will be the person that has the most vested interest.

I guess all three in a way ...
Like many, many households I hoard our change but purely because it's easier to only carry notes rather than any specific monetary reason.
I invested in PM's at the turn of the century when they were still affordable (to me) and although I later sold some during the big run-up I still have some that are duplicates and will be sold as and when I see fit.
I collect coins although I do not do 'sets' - the only one I even considered was sovereigns but the run in PM prices quickly dashed any hopes of ever achieving that. I collect coins that hold a fascination for me, whether that be in the design, the history or some form of 'uniqueness' in the coin itself. My collection contains far more coins worth very little than those with any meaningful intrinsic value so it is definately not an investment but a collection.

Any sort of hyperbole in the title puts me off straight away, if you feel a need to 'hard sell' it in the title I automatically assume it is not as good as you say it is. Crappy photos I can live with as long as they are still distinguishable (not everyone is good at photography nor has time to reach the high standards some set), no photo of both sides though and I automatically pass.
As far as the description goes any of the following will make me hit the 'back' button and move on without giving it a second thought: - insane use of colours or fonts - hyperbole - over the top background stories (I'm thinking of purchasing a coin not your autobiography) - "unsearched" - "not sure if it's real" - "inherited"/"estate sale" - any impression that the photo is a stock photo and not of the actual coin

Interesting that it shows 2014 on the edge .... can't imagine they will go with the date on the edge when they actually go into circulation and certainly not in Roman numerals. Wonder if Osborne is allowed keep that pattern piece and if it will ever become part of someone's collection - unlikely I'm sure, bet the RM took it right back off him after the photo-op lol.
Looks far nicer than the current coin imo, just hope the design chosen for the reverse is not what Chas would refer to as a carbuncle.

I'm sure at some point digital currencies (or currency) will become the norm, pretty sure Bitcoin won't be it though as imo it will be something sanctioned and fully controlled by the powers that be. What Bitcoin is doing is highlighting to them some of the many possible flaws of such an enterprise.
Will Bitcoin survive? I'm sure it will for a while yet although confidence in it must have taken a big hit over the last few weeks even for those with plenty of skin in that particular game and it's that confidence or lack thereof that in the short to medium term may well end up deciding it's fate.
The most important thing Bitcoin has highlighted for me personally is how public sentiment toward the acceptance of such a digital currency is slowly changing over time. I can only hope that the pace of that acceptance remains slow so I can see out my final years without any such introduction.

Had three, moved two on at cost to friends. Nice thick coin, packaging a bit naff but to be expected for a coin with no mark-up. Only purchased myself because I love Pistrucci's classic design, had it not had that I probably wouldn't have bothered tbh as I don't really see this going anywhere in terms of price.
