I saw lots of old gold jewelry and coins in the past. My dad was the largest gold dealer in small town Semarang, Indonesia. Indonesian bought and sold gold a lot like American today, since Rupiah value continuously declined. But I don't remember seeing gloss like that, now I learn. Thanks jfransch. I watch a video about Indonesian simple elderly woman, a peasant from a very small island called Banana Island in South Sumatra. She plants cloves all her life. I was surprise that she gauge the value of her products with gold. I never knew that simple people like that thinking like business people. Well, Sumatra's original name in Sanskrit language is Suwarna Dwipa or means Island of Gold or Gold Island. There are some gold mines in Sumatra, but I guess it must be a lot more in the past.

Hold on to your Kupang's coins Sel. As far I know, Kupang is in Timor, not Aceh. Not all coins they found are not from Aceh, some does. Most of them are from Turkey, even though they found them in Aceh.

Here they are, I just want to share what I learned from these old Mexicana coins auction. Sure the Hookneck is very interesting. At the beginning, I thought I could salvaged it and make "key chain" out of tampered old coins. But somebody out there still interested to it. 1776 US birth year is also a surprise for me, now I will pay more attention on that year. If any... The auction is well worth it if I could buy more of these Mexicana coins :). I hope I came across again in the future, but I doubt it.

Another one, (too bad I didn't have the picture) is East Indies Madura Island counter stamp. It brought high premium.

I am not sure if this is appropriate, but I know a lot of forum members selling in eCrater. I need help to post my coins on eCrater. I am going to sell ALL my collection for good cause. I realize that it will took me ages to list thousands of coins here. I thought it will be better to "permanently" listed there for everybody to see. I have many pre WWII from countries that not exist any longer. Most of them are few dollars worth, too expensive to buy by it self due to high shipping's cost. They will be perfect to sell as "fillers" to sell with other more value. I have no heart to recycle them. Also most of my silver coins, due too high silver price, especially the UNC German Silver Commemorative. |

It is 1946. Funny thing happened, I took my magnifying glass wanted to check the year this coin. I was baffled, when I read 31973B. It took me a while to realize that I read the wrong side of the coin. The 31973B is BELGIE upside down and back ward. |

Peter THOMAS, the story getting a lot more interesting. http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/..hip-mystery/
Hugh Edwards and his team believe the Aagtekerke struck Half Moon Reef in the archipelago off Geraldton when it disappeared en route to Indonesia in 1726.
Next month they hope to find some of the three tonnes of silver coins the ship was carrying between the Cape of Good Hope and Jakarta that could prove the wreck is in the Abrolhos Islands.
Three tons of pre 1726 coins are whole lots of Dough today. This is only one of them, there are 1,400 shipwrecks. |

Hi Peter THOMAS and WVUcoins, Nice to know you guys. It looks like there are only few of us in this forum collecting Netherlands and Ned Indie. I have MANY pre 1945, Nederlands Indies and The Netherlands started from early 19th century. I was born in Java and started collecting coins on my early age. But now, I am selling everything in the forum for good cause. I also try to sell to The Netherlands, since there must be a lot more collectors there. Peter, since you love coins and history, I will tell you that the Dutch found out that the fastest way to sail to Indie is straight from South Africa to West Australia, and then go north to Indie. People found Dutch ship wrecks in West Australia. Do you know what they brought most to Indie? They brought coins for Indies monetaries and to buy goods, also to add weight to stabilize their ships. I learn that they even brought bricks in the past to build fortress and churches for same reason.

Westwood Arms, I just want to let you know that particular 1749 is going to PCGS, and Ponterio going to auction it on November 1, 2012. I also post this information under Mexicana topic.
Regarding Sovereign and other popular gold coins, I still don't know how to detect fakes. They are made same way the original coins, the copy must be off a little. For trained eyes, they probably know where to spot the mistakes. I would like to learn. They are available abundantly in Indonesia. Literary you could buy them off the street, in every jewelry store. I also wonder if the real one carry premium. I am sure I could return it, since I know the seller "quite well", what disappointing me that he crossed my trust. May be he didn't know either, since this is a jewelry store, not selling or specialized in coins.

Just came back from Ponterio. The Gold coin is FAKE. It is like Sovereign, many people fake them because it makes easier to buy and sell as "standard" of the coin market. I use to help my dad to select thousands of Sovereigns on one sitting when I was young, take a break for lunch and back to work again. But I really couldn't tell the good and the fake. I just looking for the better grades for him. The fake coin will go back to the seller in Newport Beach!
