Rotated Indian cents are my specialty, and I have 20 different dates with rotated dies between 90 and 180 degrees! The 3 most common dates for significant rotated dies are 1864L, 1868 (proof), and 1897. The rotated die census puts the population estimate for 1864L rotated Indian cents at an R4, meaning between 81 and 200 examples are believed to exist. I personally think they're cool, but less than 200 people collect them if you know what I mean. |

I appreciate the comments all.
I don't think I'll finish the collection, but it's been a 35 year quest and I'm not stopping yet. I've never seen any error on a 1909 hit the market, let alone an error on a 1909-S. Of course, I never thought I'd come across an 1877 error, but I got a nice struck through that I like. Not a major error by any means, and a key date with such an error makes it less desirable in many regards, but it's something and I like it. I've also seen an 1877 with a rim clip. And an extremely low grade damaged 1877 5% or so off center error. How that one circulated so long is beyond me. A proportional number of errors to the low mintage no doubt.
I look forward to an error on an 1873 in the next 5 years - I imagine that's next. I know there's a popular variety of that year, super popular and fairly attainable, but I don't count varieties as part of my errors.
Some day I'll put them all together in a photo album. |

New purchase for my Indian Cent Error collection. I've been collecting errors on Indian cents ever since I was 12 and bought an 1869 Indian in my local coin shop that had a 90 degree rotation on it (and that was a longggg time ago).
I don't know why 1883 took so long ... the mintage wasn't low. This MS-64 Off center was a splurge and worth the wait. I'm now just missing 3 Indian cents with errors on them: 1873, 1909, and 1909-S. Obviously the 09-S will be the toughest.

if you have another (older) silver dollar, you would be able to tell a difference in the ping the coin makes when dropped on a table. Even without a comparison coin, this one will have a duller ping than you'd expect, and one way to tell when coins have been modified like that. |
