I've always gone with 100 of the 1938 proofs (all denoms struck) - that is consistent with what has turned up and the records show 100 were struck (it is possible that Sharples has found records that another run was produced but I haven't confirmed this), as to how many were sold, that's up for debate but the 1938 proof crown is extremely rare, I've seen maybe 10-15 surface in my lifetime so I'd lean towards the conservative figures for that. |

Quote: They might say that they don't grade MS with wear but they do
They don't allow wear in MS holders. The misconception comes from what 'wear' actually is, wear is any metal movement a coin suffers that occurs during normal use (i.e. circulation), it does not include friction that occurs during the minting process, it does not include wear caused by cleaning or doctoring and it most certainly does not include die wear. I don't know where this misconception came from but I too carried this misconception (with comments like, 'wear is allowed in MS grades as long as it didn't occur in circulation' which obviously can't make sense as all wear must occur through circulation) up until April this year when a dealer invited me to look up the term in a dictionary.

Echidna, even on bulk I know they do the 2 people + 1 (if disagreed) to view it. I doubt they'd get lazy on economy submissions considering they do it for bulk.
Grading can't be perfect, there's a lot of subjectivity to it, particularly around the 58/MS border, what constitutes circulation wear or wear acquired during manufacture is subjective - I've even seen cases where all three of their graders came back with a different grade. |
