1937 And 1938 Crowns Aus- Proff?

I've always gone with 100 of the 1938 proofs (all denoms struck) - that is consistent with what has turned up and the records show 100 were struck (it is possible that Sharples has found records that another run was produced but I haven't confirmed this), as to how many were sold, that's up for debate but the 1938 proof crown is extremely rare, I've seen maybe 10-15 surface in my lifetime so I'd lean towards the conservative figures for that.

@stan - people lost a lot more than $1.8M, that was just the amount stolen (not fraud but criminal theft) by its director Rob Jackman.

They might say that they don't grade MS with wear but they do

They don't allow wear in MS holders. The misconception comes from what 'wear' actually is, wear is any metal movement a coin suffers that occurs during normal use (i.e. circulation), it does not include friction that occurs during the minting process, it does not include wear caused by cleaning or doctoring and it most certainly does not include die wear. I don't know where this misconception came from but I too carried this misconception (with comments like, 'wear is allowed in MS grades as long as it didn't occur in circulation' which obviously can't make sense as all wear must occur through circulation) up until April this year when a dealer invited me to look up the term in a dictionary.

Nope - I'd get the gold content tested too, colour looks off.

A lot of fake sovereigns were made when the UK banned gold exports so many fakes were made with their full gold content but this is not true with all examples.

If the cert ID says Counterfeit then they're won't be supplied in a slab, you'll get them in plastic flip.

@sel_69l and @basebal21

They're not a common coin, the no mintmark variety (or error) is known only by a handful of examples, see values here:
https://bluesheet.com.au/Decimal_Co...4_One_Dollar

Worth about $1200 in that grade.

@CoinOS

I'm talking about the altered date 1923 half penny that was in an NGC holder.

@CoinOS

It was an NGC holder at Heritage. We pointed it out to HA, they withdrew it and sent the coin to NGC.

Try asking the Australian-threepence blog for details, they were aware of it too.

This isn't a genuine specimen. It's just a harshly cleaned AU - he could drop the last three digits form the price and I still wouldn't buy it.

Buyer's premium used to be illegal in NSW for obvious reasons so auctioneers simply held their auctions in other states. NSW not wanting to lose the business therefore made it legal regardless of the ethical issues.

220,000 is correct, you can get mintage figures along with values for all the shillings here:
https://bluesheet.com.au/Commonweal...933_Shilling

Just remember these numbers reflect the original quantity minted, being 92.5% silver, a lot of them would have been melted so the actual surviving count is much lower.

MS63BN - it's just softly struck.

The discolouration of the high points may indicate wear in which case it'll be AU58 but it has UNC surfaces so I doubt there's any wear on those points.

Echidna, even on bulk I know they do the 2 people + 1 (if disagreed) to view it. I doubt they'd get lazy on economy submissions considering they do it for bulk.

Grading can't be perfect, there's a lot of subjectivity to it, particularly around the 58/MS border, what constitutes circulation wear or wear acquired during manufacture is subjective - I've even seen cases where all three of their graders came back with a different grade.

It's not only unethical, it's illegal. If everything you say is correct you're legally entitled to return your purchase for a refund.

As far as business strikes go, the 1920s sov and 1893m old head half sovs are the scarcest with 2 and 3 examples available to collectors respectively. Note the sov has a specimen known (pictured) and the half sov has a proof, plus there's another sov and two halves in the RAM collection and another two proof halves in the Museum of Victoria.
