some pedigree's can really carry some weight in the collector community like the Jack Lee collection, he was well known in the community and had an eye for amazing coins so there are collectors that will pay a premium to acquire Jack Lee Pedigree coins. Its my personal belief that the original Jack Lee Collection had better eye appeal than the Jack Lee 1 or 2 sets but thats just my personal opinion. So with some it may be an ego thing but others the pedigree does carry some weight
SPP-Ottawa, Yeah I see that, congrats on the promotion. Its good to see some names I recognize along side some new ones that seem to have a lot to contribute as well
edit After looking around I see we have lost some beloved members as well, some I am without words to describe the loss but I know they pain they were in and the fight they fought but I will miss them none the less
I see some people are posting 1878 Morgans today so here is a picture of the VAM-85 VAM-70 VAM-79 I can not find a reverse picture of my VAM-79 so I will have to take another one but will have to set up my camera first VAM-80 This is another one that the reverse will have to come later because I can not find one on the server as of yet VAM-81 VAM-82 VAM-83 MY VAM-84 and VAM-84A seems to be missing as well so they will also come later
ChildOfTheWheat, yes yours is one I can say I don't remember but I would like to welcome you to the forum even though I am not sure how long you have been a member I know I haven't had the honor of doing so yet. And I also want to thank you for the welcome back. It looks like I have some congratulations to give out to a few members that have moved up in the ranks also but I will do all of that another day and probably in prvt
I will start a thread of most of my coins in my collection but instead of loading the forum down with duplicate photos of coins that has already been posted I will do my best to track down photos I have already posted. My collection isn't large but it could definitely take up some server space that could be used better somewhere else. Of course I am sure everyone knows the VAM-85 is still the crown jewel of my collection (at least in my mind) and that is the one coin that will probably have to pried from my hands after I take my last breath. I don't have much to contribute once we get past the first years of the Morgans so I will just stay out of that one for now
Hey all old and new members, I am sure some will remember who I am and I am also sure there are quite a few new members that have no idea who I am So I am going to start here again and introduce myself once more. I have been an absent member of this forum for probably a year or a little longer because of some health and personal issues. I am still and probably always will be a 1878 VAM collector even though I haven't added a coin to my collection since the last time I was logged in to this forum. Anyway I hope that the better I start to feel the more active I will become again and hopefully become part of the family again that I have missed so much
I am guessing their press is different than the US presses because this type of error isn't possible here as far as I have heard. One side is square and the other is round (or some other shape) so this type of "mistake" doesn't happen. The only way you find a US coin this way is if its a magicians coin or some other manufactured type of "error" (for lack of a better word)
the Peace Dollars are plentiful in just about any grade (except maybe the lower grades, as I don't really remember seeing any P0-01 Peace Dollars) and are fairly cheap unless it is some type of rare VAM or key date. Now the Seated halves are another story, they are very popular so their price is going to set you back a whole lot more than the Peace Dollar in the same grade. The Liberty Seated Half in AU-50 will probably cost you as much if not more than a MS-65 Peace Dolar graded by the same companies. They are still out there but you just have to be prepared to pay for them a little more than you would the Peace Dollars
I had a Morgan that was almost black on the Reverse and NCS didn't decline it. I am not saying they wont but mine was very dark on the Reverse and they "conserved" it. If I remember correctly it was in a NGC slab when I sent it to NCS not sure if that mattered or not
go to this site and it will show you some of the fake slabs and the differences to look for http://coins.about.com/od/coingradi...Diagnostics/ This may not be all of them that are out there but it is a starting point
it really doesn't matter, the coin is not market acceptable because it has been in contact with heat and thats what caused the "damage" or toning on the coin. No need to be bickering back and forth, If you are happy with your purchase then so be it but I don't think someone calling it what it is before you could educate the next person is out of line on a forum that is trying to educate the collector so they don't get burnt themselves. I have purchased coins I knew were AT myself but always at a marked down price and always for what it was. Some AT coins have beautiful colors that are almost impossible to find in the real world. Since you knew what you were buying I see no foul for buying it, You just have to expect other members with knowledge to tell their opinion when a coin is posted like this
1880-S is one of the Morgans that I would say is a perfect type coin because they are usually hammered really hard and they are very plentiful is super high grades and DMPL examples are even readily available. So with that being said I am going to jump on the boat with 1916 D Merc and say it more than likely is a Business strike with either PL or DMPL surfaces, especially considering I do not believe there were any Proofs minted at the SanFransisco Mint in 1880, all the Proof Morgans were Minted at Philadelphia Mint that year
Thanks it is supposed to be part of the second Dansco sets I am putting together only these were all going to stay in the slabs but I probably will never finish it
the rim is what caught my eye at first glance. I am pretty sure this one is a counterfeit. You pretty much have to approach any Trade Dollar as it being counterfeit and then prove its real
