$0.25. A guess that is both funny to me and within the "realistic" ruleset.

Not sure why this would bother anyone. As I said, 25 cents and 50 cents were taken, as well as any other amount I could conceive of possibly paying for the coin. Therefore, I put in a silly high guess...which incredibly (in terms of position) was only one away from the correct amount. Aren't we here just for fun? I can't imagine my guess made this less fun for someone. It's not like I'm on here every week posting ridiculous guesses.

With 25 cents and 50 cents taken, I figured I was out and would just go high.

If it were a $1, I'd probably keep it. You could probably sell it for a few bucks over face value, but once you pay the fees (and if you value your time at all), you probably won't make much profit.

I have to agree with the others. The cut is well within tolerances (it needs to cut off part of the printing and/or show part of the next bill to be considered a cutting error). The serial number is sort of a little interesting but isn't considered "fancy" or something a collector would want.

Probably the #2 question on the forum after people asking about fancy (but not really fancy) serial numbers. We should probably make a couple sticky threads for those.

A lot to unpack in that small post. I googled Project Sandman and now have 99.99% confidence that it is kookoo-for-cocoa-puffs conspiracy theory nonsense. Reminds me of reading about flat-earth, anti-vax, or election conspiracy garbage. With that said, numismatic collections are almost always a bad long-term investment when compared to stocks, real estate, bonds, etc. As SAP said, maybe "speculation" but not "investment."

Commodities...well it depends what you mean by commodities. Commodity futures can do well at times (you could argue the current inflationary times included), but you are way late to the party, and they are not historically a good long-term investment either. IMHO, you need to be an insider to really make money here. However, if you are just talking about stocking up on physical commodities...well, let's just say that no financial advisor is going to recommend you buy $50,000 of copper or some other raw material to store in your basement.

The greatest investors of our lifetime like Buffet give their investment advice for free. Listen, use common sense, and tune out the random garbage we are constantly flooded with over the internet. That, of course, includes my advice, which is worth exactly what you paid for it.

As for your original question on the future of collecting, I interpret that to mean "will the value of my collection go up or down?" My personal opinion is that after the growth of the past few years, we are likely to experience a period where the curve flattens or perhaps a small dropoff over the next 1-3 years. After that (5+ years), the overall economic situation will either improve, remain flat, or decline depending on the exact severity and length of the expected upcoming recession, the annual inflation rates for the next 10 years, the future money supply changes, and how international trade and diplomacy look for the next decade, and other factors. However, the economic forecast is only one factor that will influence the future value of our collections. Does the boomer generation collect at a higher rate than the gen X and Z generations will? As older populations age out of the hobby, how will that impact demand? If I was forced to make a guess, I expect these factors and inflation will generally cancel each other out, and we will see flat(ish) prices/valuations over the next 30 years once we get past some near-term inflation and correction.

I only buy from Reddit and Instagram anymore.

Not sure I understand rejecting a platform with buyer protections in favor of anonymous platforms with no protection. I can understand some people only wanting to deal in-person with LCSs or known dealers, but I think you are much likely to get scammed and have no recourse on Reddit/Instagram/Facebook Marketplace/Etc than on eBay (where you can always put in a claim for the item not being what was pictured/described).

Hydrangeas color is dependent on the ph of the soil. For instance, my plants can produce pink or blue flowers if you change the ph.

Thanks for the heads up. I signed up for the reverse proofs and the uncirculated Peace dollar (because I missed that one last year). I thought about it and ultimately decided I didn't need more Morgans or the regular proofs. Maybe I'll regret it later, but the mint charges so much for these that I just couldn't justify buying a pile of them to sit in the closet.

Cleaned Coins Should Be Graded.

I think SAP hit it on the head. Coins are not paintings, cars, or pottery. In the coin world, "cleaning" is synonymous with damaging. If you don't do any damage to the coin, then it is not going to be tagged as details/cleaned.

Rembrandt: if there is somehow a piece found in original or near-original condition, they wouldn't restore it. His works were displayed for hundreds of years in smoky (candles, tobacco, incense) non-climate-controlled environments and are typically covered in a greasy layer of grime, soot, dirt, etc. that dulls the colors and can slowly damage the paint and canvas. Restoration is considered a better alternative to losing the artwork forever.

Classic cars: non-destructive cleaning (akin to acetone on coins) is not an issue. As for destructive restoration, just like coins, an original classic car is always worth more than a restored classic car. Classic cars with the original paint job and all-original parts go for way more than restored cars.

Antique pottery: more similar to ancient coins, which typically do need to be cleaned.

As to the OP's point on TPGs grading cleaned coins, don't they all give a ballpark grade (XF details, AU details, etc.)? I think that's fair considering otherwise they have to grade both the coin and grade the level of cleaning.

They always say to buy the coin and not the holder. So, if you can buy a cleaned/details coin that shows no damage or sign of cleaning, then you can get it for less and have a coin you are perfectly happy with. There is a market for everything and there isn't any right or wrong way to collect after all.

One of the real classics of US banknote collecting for sure (I chose it for my avatar after all). This is the note that first got me drooling over large size notes. Mine is in pretty much the same condition as yours and is one (if not the) highlight of my collection. Congrats.
