Isn't the first one overweight? Looks like these should way 17.2 or 17.9 g.
I'd be very careful with these. My first question is always how much trust do I have in the seller-is it a knowledgeable person with experience selling these types of coins? Is the seller letting them go for cheap-probably fake.
It bothers me that the seller is touching the coin with their fingers like that---usually shows lack of experience in handling coins. Unless you trust the seller a lot, I wouldn't buy them.

Yes, when you first start selling they do this. It happened to me again-I believe I shipped an item a day after eBay's ship by date and they did it again but it was lifted after subsequent items shipped on schedule.

Looks like you really did your homework! Doesn't make sense to link it to Heaton since why would the coin be in circulated condition if someone got through Heaton directly in some way so probably acquired on the trip to Nanjing long ago. Rim hits on the edge consistent with circulation so no worries there and the numbers seem to check out. The graininess still bothers me a bit, but if you can vouch for the provenance, you might have a genuine period coin! Are there any other Chinese coins in the box?

I've seen so many fake silver eagles on ebay selling for about 25 dollars with a stock image, supposedly shipping from a U.S. address and I report them to ebay but get messages saying there's nothing wrong with the item despite the crazy price.

You should also weight it to make sure weight checks out and follow that up with checking for the right diameter/thickness. The chunk of metal at the top on the rim and the graininess of the dragon's visage would make doubtful of its authenticity.

Sounds like this is about chopmarks, but found mostly on Spanish milled dollars.

Yes, it just looks weird to me how the layer is peeled back, but there's no damage to the rim itself, and then there's a flat surface under the damage.

Not tipping the scales. It's seriously underweight! Does the scale check out with other coins?

Weight just checked out. So most likely not a counterfeit.
Doesn't look polished to me in hand, but probably cleaned. Wiped, possibly.

@cap, any chance that we are seeing the heavy silver plating and core of a fake?

The thought also crossed my mind. There is damage to the side rim, but more at a vertical angle to the main damage. I ran a magnet over it this morning just to see, but it's not magnetic. I'll add some more pictures below.

Just off-chance-is this an error or just damage?
