Coinfrog I see the effect you are referring to thank you for the feedback. Would this indicate a relatively old cleaning or was it just lightly altered; could it be due to lighting in the shot? Just asking questions.

Another 1866. The color looks nice and even. I put it at VF 30, but let me know what you all think. Priced at $159.

I have a terrible time determining original surfaces on nickels sometimes. Color looks good on this one, so I put it at VF 35, priced at $200 so let me know what y'all think.

Still getting the hang of grading these. Unsure about the color on the reverse, but I put it at AU 55 or so. Priced at $235 let me know what y'all think

Good Morning Folks. Looking at some new pickups on Ebay and as usual I wanted to get y'alls opinion before pulling the trigger. Seller is asking $45, the surfaces are evenly colored and I cannot identify any problem spots, so it looks good to me. However this is a very new seller, so let me know what you all think about grade and the originality of the surfaces.

There are more photos in different lighting available if necessary.

Thanks in advance!

@52Raymo That was my plan anyway, I always haggle a bit.

This whole thing has been very enlightening for me, I think I'm getting there slowly but surely.

It is an album, with both sides of the coin visible. This was very helpful, so thank you to all who contributed.

I don't know if this is the right place to ask this or not, but I wanted y'alls advice.

For probably two years now I have had a Whitman album ffor pre 1964 Washington Quarters. However I have probably 30 or more pieces to go into this album, but I have yet to remove the plastic on it. I am putting together this set in AU-MS grade, but because of this I am afraid of taking the coins out of their 2x2's for fear of devaluing them by pressing them into the album.

What is the best procedure for handling high grade coins like this? Is just washing my hands sufficient? Cotton gloves? Some other barrier? Nothing that I have acquired yet is particularly valuable, but I just want to preserve them as best I can.

Sorry if this is a ridiculous question, but any input would be great.

Hello folks. After several youtube videos and other research I hope I did better with this coin than my previous one. Seller is asking $101 right now, but I think I can beat him down a bit on that front.

XF 40 is my assessment, but let me know what you guys think. All feedback is appreciated.

@jaobler: I have seen that before in an old collection of one of my family members. mine are stored in a climate controlled room all together and thankfully I haven't had any problems yet.

@Slider23: That's a good idea. I have several dateless buffalo nickels, and I've always wanted to try acid dating them. Maybe this is my excuse to do that among other things.

In general, it sounds like I need to find my way to a coin show sooner rather than later.

I received an album for both Buffalo and Liberty Head nickels this past week for Christmas; so begins the journey of completing both of them.

However, after looking at many coins online and even posting some here for feedback I am truly struggling to figure out how to identify cleanings on them. My first thought is this has something to do with the metal itself. With copper and silver I am able to see cleanings with some level of accuracy due to their washed out appearance and altered color. However, after looking at various nickels on ebay and even photograde I find it impossible to differentiate between those designated as cleaned and problem free coins from TPG's.

Is there something I am missing? Do nickels wear differently in some fashion? To further complicate things, it is fairly easy to find resources online to help with identifying cleaned silver and copper coins, but no special attention is ever given to nickels that I can find.

To sum everything up, if anyone has any tips for identifying cleaned nickels, opinions on whether they are different in any way, or online resources that would help me in this task I would love to take a look at them.

Thanks in Advance!

Hello folks, hopefully I do better with this one. To my eye this is a very appealing coin, a little red remaining and some luster. Seller is asking $80, which seems okay. My eye is telling me XF 45 because of the wear on the headband, but let me know what you all think.

Thank you all for the feedback. To piggyback off the initial discussion of the surfaces, am I correct in that this coin is just a bit more washed out than an original one would be? The wear pattern does not seem like scrubbing to me, which would lead me to believe that it was possibly dipped in something? Let me know if I'm on the right track.
