Question About Tarnish On Silver War Nickels

Thanks everyone. I was pretty sure I knew the answer already, but still wanted to ask. I don't think they have enough value to send for grading but wasn't there one of the companies that you could pay extra and they would clean the coin or something before encapsulating?

Question About Tarnish On Silver War Nickels

First off, let me ease your mind. No, I'm not going to take start scrubbing away at my nickels, so don't worry. However, I would like some advice what to do.

My grandfather had numerous partial Lincoln cent albums (incomplete) and one Jefferson album that the pages separated so I put his collection in a new book after he passed away in 2014. Most of the nickels are circulated and knowing him, probably came from pocket change but his silver war nickels in the book are uncirculated.

The problem with them currently it's hard to see the detail because they have inconsistent black tarnish. I assume this is only going to get worse over time and I wonder if there is something I can do that will not damage the coin or any mint luster to them. There aren't any 6-step nickels but three really close 5-step.

Thanks for the help,
Mike

Doubling On New Hampshire Quarter?

I've had this New Hampshire quarter for a while but only recently got a digital microscope to take photos and now I would like to get everyone's opinion. I'm having a hard time determining if it is a worn die, double die, combination of both, or what.

While it is mostly noticeable on in "New Hampshire" and the motto, after looking on the obverse there appears to be doubling in "America".

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. It is only lightly circulated since it was first pulled from change in the early 2000s.

New Display I Made For My Son's Dime Type Set

It's been quite a while since I've posted last. I helped my 11yo son find the last piece he needed for his dime type set he was building. His interest in coins all started after he found both a Mercury and a silver Eisenhower in the Coinstar return tray.

After a lot of searching, I couldn't find any six dime holders so I decided to make one for him. I used some black acrylic sandwiched between two clear pieces. All I need now is to square up the edges and drill four holes for the mounting screws.

then I noticed a inverted V mark on the R in AMERICA that doesn't appear to be post mint damage. I need to try to get a better picture. And finally this pit on the pilot's chin.

after looking closer at other parts of the coin, I noticed some other things. It looks like the base of the 2nd T in STATES is missing. the upper edge of most of the words is weakly struck or the die worn.

I have barely been on the forums since last year for a variety of family issues and I apologize for that but I needed to get back on because of a 2021 Tuskegee quarter my son found.

It looks to me like the planchet was damaged before minting but I wonder the opinion here. As seen in the photos, the marking/scoring/damage is below Washington's chin and the TY in Liberty is damaged from it and it stops at his neck. It then picks up at the back of his neck, seems to go "behind" his hair and finally terminates.

Opinions are welcome!

Thanks,
Mike

I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Please forgive me for not posting sooner. I feel terrible. Life has been hectic since the secret santa names/addresses first went out and I think I've been on CCF once maybe in that time.

My package arrived safely awhile ago and I've been in communication with my generous santa. I will be happy to post pictures later. I just wanted to get a post in.

Thanks are certainly in order to the three secret santas who sent gifts to my boys. Alex and Matthew were so excited to receive two packages from here in the US, one from Turkey and one from Canada just arrived 30 minutes ago. I have not told them yet. (the other gift is Alex's MRI shows no tumors, which is part of the reason for my absence).

Again, it has been weighing on my mind that I need to express my gratitude. I just should have done it sooner.

Ordering Quarter Rolls/Bags From The Mint?

Maybe it has been discussed already but I couldn't find it in a search. If you order rolls/bags of quarters from the mint website (available in P, D, S) are the West Point quarters mixed in the P and D at the same ratio as the rest of circulating coins or are these different?

Wholesale Source For Shipwreck Coins?

I was wondering where do all the big coin websites get their shipwreck/admiral gardner/Dutch VOC coins from? I would assume there is a wholesale source somewhere. I was looking to buy a large lot but don't know where I could find them at an uninflated price. I would assume they get their Roman coins pretty cheap in bulk and I would be interested in the same thing but buying at retail price is not an option.

Thanks!

Continental Currency Paper?

Hello,
It isn't a secret about the composition of modern US currency and how they comprised of linen and cotton but I was looking at some continental currency and noticing they are usually very fragile and in relatively poor condition. That made me wonder. What did continental currency paper consist of? Was it more paper than our modern notes or did it have a similar linen and/or cotton composition?

Thanks!

I've read about and watched videos on the subject of purifying the silver and am totally comfortable doing it but getting sulfuric acid is obviously tricky. I guess I could always put it up on eBay as a lot.

I have a handful of scrap silver electrical contacts (from relays, high voltage circuit breakers etc) of unknown purity with some being mixed with tungsten and some still soldered to copper components.

I am curious what refiners out there will assay what I have and instead of cash, pay in bullion or melt what I have and give back minus fee. I know it's not a lot but not sure what to do with it at this point. I want something to put away for the boys for when they get older and these are not doing any good in my garage.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

Looking For Lot Of Dutch 18th-19th Cen Voc Duit Coins

It's been awhile since I've posted but I'm looking for a variety lot of at least 20 Dutch VOC duits coins. A lot of the ones you can find are in relic/shipwreck-like condition which I don't mind but short of going to Indonisia or where a lot of them can be found I'm a little open to condition.

Many sellers I find online seem to have a never ending supply and I'm wondering how they get these large lots.

Thanks so much!

Denmark-Like Coin From The Middle East? Weight Modified? Weird.

Old Post Posted 07/25/2016  3:38 pm

It's been awhile since I've been on the forums but I was recently given a world coin collection of a coworkers mother. Yes. Given. There were pieces from all over the place dating to the late 1800s to the 1950s primarily. Nothing earth shattering but some very nice pieces.

Among them was this strange piece I just had to post about. I'm a little curious. I'm not sure where it's from but it is dated 1956 (maybe 1966) and has the crown and cypher like Frederik IX of Denmark but a middle eastern like eagle as well. It reminds me of the insignia from Iraq.

The strangest part is there is a small steel square soldered onto it as if purposely trying to change the weight. It weighs 6.4 grams now and is the same diameter of a quarter.

Any thoughts on origin or the square? Do you think it was added to fool a machine or something?

Very Old Russian Coin? Before 1700-S?

I just got this old coin on a whim from an antique mall dealer but he doesn't seem to know what it is either. It looks Russian in design and quite old but I am at a loss.

The language is not modern Russian and could possibly be an old style. There is no date I can see and it's about the size of a silver dollar. I think it is brass or copper.

Any clue? Anyone seen this before?

Mike
