I saw "Inside Edition" Tuesday, and laughed about the run on eggs in the US. Some areas were paying $18/19 (US) a dozen. Maybe the "states" should ask to become provinces of Canada ?!! Free healthcare, actual education, lower crime and less gun violence, and the $4.09 (Cdn.) a dozen eggs were on sale this week for $3.77. What a country ! |

I believe this is the box that purelywasted was referring to. It's just cheap cardboard. When I got the set from ebay, there were no plastic envelopes, just tissue paper. The coins were loose, and marked up a bit. Also seems they weren't all PL. I don't know who wrote on it, but it looks like it could be of that time.

Pacificoin, she could have taken loose coins that were brought in (by a shady character?) and put them in the envelope herself, to be sent back to the Mint for melting.
Enyaw, great find, no metal detector needed. |

Imprecise cutting of the die. The sides of the incused part of the die weren't perfectly smooth (hard to cut perfect sharp-angle corners into the die), and the arrows point to telltale marks left on the raised parts of the coin.

I can't believe the coin looks like that in-hand. To try and grade a coin, we need sharp photos, with good lighting. Shine some direct light on it because it looks so washed-out in your pix that a lot of viewers here think it has been cleaned (I'm betting it wasn't but need better photo- try different angles). If you have any processing software, adjust the contrast and brightness to get it closer to what you really see. |

1970 not 1970s. 1970 5/10/25 are a little harder to find.
The varieties Enyaw listed are major ones to look for. 1969 Large Date is the jewel. If you have 10 rolls of each denomination ($170), I'd say your chances of finding any of the 5 is 0. 99+% of nickel change is worth face value unless in pristine condition, really spotless, not just "looks nice".
Start a collection (for/with kids?). Buy some 2x2 holders and put the best looking coin for each year in it. Go to the site Enyaw posted and look through each denomination and year to see what other varieties or errors to look for. If you have the time. After months, then years, then decades of researching and searching, you will find many interesting, non-valuable nickel coin varieties and errors, and maybe some nice ones . You may get hooked on it, so beware.
If the above sounds like a headache, here's what I'd do: - first and foremost, if you're married, buy something nice for him/her or you're toast . That'll leave you $165 . - if you drink, a bottle of "Southern Comfort" + - an ounce at the government pot store (what a country!) + - a thick rib steak, or a rack of ribs. Nah, I'd probably look for a VF 1902 50 cents - there's a gaping hole in my binder.

I have a 1000 things to do, but instead, I decided to bore you with another long-winded post about another coloured cent. It was going in the junk pile until I gave it a little wipe with my t-shirt.

Still looks pretty bad so I shed some light on the subject. (first 2 photos are LED soft white bulb=60w, like most new lights)

Brighter halogen desk lamp - makes any marks more obvious, and in this case, shows a die crack from the king's eyebrow to his hair.

The reverse has multiple colours and multiple errors. There's a die clash from the left leaf through 1 CE. There's a die crack after the last A of CANADA which goes through K*G to the tip of the right leaf. There is an indented struck-through mark near K*G, with several raised lines running from it, plus several other raised lines which don't correspond to a die clash (through ANADA also).

Here's a closer look. You can make out lines inside the mark which appear like the coil of a spring...? Before you say it's pmd, I had hesitated to call it a strike-through error and happened to look at other 1947's, and I swear, the very next coin had the same errors, with less of a die clash, so minted later. The mark was also less evident, although the lines and die crack are evident.
