The LSC just looks like a silhouette of Lincoln.
I'm going to send this set back. It looks like a new process, so I don't figure the replacement set will look any better, but it will be my measly little protest. I have never sent anything back before. |

Yeah, I feel the same. Silver and copper are great, but there is something about the way nickels age and tone.
I love my nickel set, and I chose the coins to go in the album not by how many steps, or super high grade, but rather eye appeal. I'd put my set up against a "perfect" set any day. Until you put on a loupe, my set is prettier. Not too often people look at my albums through a loupe! |

I just got my 2018 proof set, and this thing is HORRIBLE!
At first glance they are really cameo, which one expects from modern proofs. However looking closer, the details are washed out. It almost looks like they have a new process that tried too hard to make the devices frosty. Does that make sense? The devices, especially the busts, almost look sand blasted, for lack of a better description. The details are washed away. My quaters, and the LSC are notably bad.
I'm considering sending the set back, but if they are all going to be like this, as in some new process, I don't know if it will matter.
Thoughts? |

I wish they would give us the quarter we were supposed to get in 1932. It was gorgeous, and won the contest to be the quarter. Flannigans design came in second place. The secretary of treasury disqualified the winner because it was designed by a woman!
Making that the new quarter for the next 80-100 years would be fixing a huge injustice. |

Yep, the mint stopped making the half (and all the other coins) in what was the standard relief, in the 1990s. They went to a cheaper to mint, as well as cheaper looking, low relief design at that time. Saves them money on minting costs.
A lot of people call the old relief "high relief", but that's incorrect because the mint has made true high relief coins in the past, and the standard relief doesn't compare. "Mid relief" or "standard relief" would be more accurate.
Anyway, since the half is no longer produced for circulation, but rather minted now solely for the collector, the mint has decided, just for appearances, to return the old standard relief to the OBVERSE ONLY of the current half. Personally, I like it, and wish they would do it to all the coins.
My mother made a comment yesterday that blew me away, since I have never seen her give any coin more than a cursory look... She said "New coins are so ugly and hard to look at.. Maybe it's just me getting older, but they are so flat. I don't remember them so flat."
Knowing my mother, the last time she looked at a coin in earnest was 20 years ago... Goes to show that people DO notice our ugly coinage, sooner or later. |

No one can stop you from endlessly making posts on the same topic, but you really should stop using words like "we", making assumptions that "we", as in everyone, wants what you are trying to shove down our throats. You like beating a dead horse, fine, but don't let lurkers or new-comers think that this is a popular issue by using language that suggests such, in your continual bashing of our coins. Thank you... |

Sweet!
I gotta ask... What are your plans moving forward? Are you just going to call this set done, and move on to other sets? Just call it a circulated set. OR, are you going to keep your eyes peeled for nicer examples and slowly upgrade coins, an ongoing process until you have an UNC set?
I tend to finish my sets, then casually upgrade to the best examples I find. It's a continual process, but I can technically say my sets are "done", even though I have some upgrades to make. Make sense?
Just curious... |

I never look at my album coins with a loupe. I just go for eye appeal when it comes to album coins. I am such a perfectionist, there isn't a coin ever produced that I could look at with a loupe and like. No one will ever look at the coins in MY albums with a loupe either... So if naked eye appeal is a 10, it doesn't matter if it's a 1 when you look at it under a loupe.
Make sense? It's like worrying over how sausage is made, or the FDA limit on how many rat hairs allowed per pound. Even though they are limited, you know they are there, and it's best just to focus on the end result. It tastes good. Or in the case of the albums, it looks good. Even coins that aren't all that under a loupe, can make for a really high end album. Just a thought. |

Thank you for the site! It's a great resource.
As for buying/selling/trading, IMO it's a crucial part of my hobby, just as is the exchange of info and ideas. When people in the same hobby get together to share ideas and compare methods, they develop trust, and a natural extension to free trade of help and ideas is free trade of hobby items. It's also a form of help when you make mutually beneficial deals with people you have a rapport with. Make sense?
I'm sorry, but to suggest a market here is inappropriate couldn't be more wrong. People should have some time vested in the site to trade. That is a great rule. Also, the items in the market must be very narrow in scope. You don't want a fleaarket. As long as these common sense guidelines rule the market, then it's absolutely an asset to the site. No question. Thank you Bobby for keeping that additional resource open to us! Dave |

GR58,
I was just blowing off frustration. I know what you say is the heart of the problem, and Dansco has no hope of making anyone happy in this situation.
I'm just venting over an impossible problem.
Blank pages are the way to go now. Takes away the nice look of preprinting, but oh well.

I have purchased several of each of the "popular" sets over the past couple years. This way I will have my JFK album full (but for gold), and I'll have sets still in OGP. Same with the CC set and the "enhanced" golden dollars, and this MoD set. I got the albums full, I got one perfect OGP set of each put back, and I have a couple to either sit on or rehome at my own discretion, depending on the aftermarket. |

Having an "album centric" collection is a relatively new thing for me. I have been collecting for nearly 40 years, but I have only been taking my modern coins out of the mint packaging and setting up Danscos for less than 10 years.
In today's climate, with the mint throwing curve balls left and right, it seems that staying with OGP would have been the ticket. But I like the albums. They have really grown on me. I just hope I live to see Dansco catch up to the mint's wacky ways. |

JBuck... It's funny, I thought to myself today "Now I just need to buy a blank page to take my FDR Dansco into the future." As soon as that crossed my mind, I started to remember I had already bought a page late last year. I dug out my Dansco, hoping to see a blank dimes page, and sure enough it was dated. I have been going through some health issues since last year, and I have just been "accumulating", and not "assembling". That's how I have been buying stuff and forgetting about it. |

Oh, and I might as well make my rant complete, and include the "S mint" Park quarters that don't have holes in my Dansco!
Edit: and my "enhanced" golden dollar! Can't stop thinking of coins that won't fit my album-centric collection. |

These 2 need to get on the same page.
I just now realized that I recently bought a new FDR Dime "Page 6" for my 8125 Dansco. (2013-2023 PDSS)
Of course this means that now I can't put the FDR set dimes into that page properly. I haven't even put a single coin in the page yet, and now I am seriously considering replacing it with a blank page, so I have the holes I want.
I already planned on it for my JFKs, so it's not like I spent money. I figure as soon as I get my custom JFK page made, Dansco will issue a page with all the right holes. That's my luck. LoL
Move along now. Just venting. Nothing to see here. |
