Hi, just sharing thoughts here... I guess the obverse shows a diademated head to right. Apollo? Not sure though, and there are many other options. I also am guessing that the reverse, if rotated 180 degrees, depicts a bull facing right. Mytilene had AE coins that would match this description, but also many other greek cities. Sorry not to be of much help, just giving some ideas. |

Hi all, a friend of mine asked me for this ID but I have little knowledge of islamic coinage. I checked usual online resources but couldnīt find any identical sample.
Would you point me out in the right direction please? I suspected Seljuks of Rum, but I am really not sure. Thank you very much!

I also personally think this is odd (suspicious) but I wouldnīt feel comfortable condemning them since there are different oppinions regarding this matter and I am no expert.
I know that multiple obverse/reverse die matches happen on roman coinage, but usually on uncirculated coins found in the same treasure, and of course full matching specimens are comparatively few within a hoard.
I have no idea how this works for Kaunos coinage, for coins found in different conservation grades.
I posted them in order of appearance. The first ones I found are the last four (three are being auctioned/offered right now as I write) and I was worried to find out that the feet are missing in all four of them. I was fearing die transfer forgery, but I am no authority on this.
Couldnīt find them in forgerynetwork or Forum Ancient Coins Fake database. I donīt know if there are other useful open resources to search for this, I would really thank any suggestions!
The British museumīs online database has pictures for one specimen from the late 1800īs with very similar style, but no matching dies afaik. (I also thought that the style was odd, but this proved me wrong). |

I mainly agree with sel_69l. The weight is ok. The style seems consistent with some other documented Price 2120, Miletus mint. The patina has been definitely tampered with. Just from the pictures I cannot see anything else relevant. I would also rather closely inspect in person before buying or simply consider something else. Iīd rather not venture any price, but you can search online and get an idea. Sorry I cannot be of any more help, best |
