We visited some relatives in Montréal during the holidays and we could NOT use cash to buy metro tickets. This was at the Honoré-Beaugrand station. So, what's the point of having a person at the gate if they don't take cash? Fortunately, I still have a bank account in Canada and a debit card, so I was able to pay for the tickets. I didn't try with my US credit card, maybe it would have worked.
So here we go, no more cash accepted for transit system in Montréal I guess.

rurocking, awesome coin!

For me 50 cents are enigmatic coins because I never saw them in circulation even when I grew up in the mid 60s. I started collecting coins in the early 70s and that's when I realized that they existed. The same can be said for silver dollars actually. I eventually learned about the switchover from silver to nickel in 1968 and never understood why the size of the 50 cent and dollar were reduced. I mean sure you change the composition, but why would you change the size? That said, 50 cents never really circulated in my lifetime.
One of my favorites that I sent for grading unfortunately missed the ultimate 70...

This thread is aging but it is interesting to touch base once in a while and look at where we stand in terms of cash usage.
A recent article published on visualcapitalist.com reports that cash transactions in 2022 represented only 18% of all transactions in the US, down from 31% in 2018. This downward trend was definitely accentuated during COVID, but we can anticipate further declines of about 2% per year.
Last month, we celebrated our daughter's graduation at the ASU Stadium and to our surprise they did not accept cash at the food stand. Apparently, this is becoming the norm.
Obviously, fewer people using cash and coins will inevitably affect future generations of coin collectors.

The closest to your issue I can recall was the square $3 gold plated coins that showed black spots over time. The theory was that the spots were caused by a chemical reaction with the black foam holding the coin inside the capsule. However, I don't know if this was ever confirmed by the RCM. Perhaps the issue was the capsule itself... But this took a while (months) for the spots to develop.

Did you notice the spots when you received the coins?
