Second Hunt Of The Year...

You know that moment you say to yourself... "Man wouldn't it be embarrassing if a metal detectorist lost his own key while out hunting?!" ...and then you realize by the time you get back to your car it has become a self fulfilling prophecy?! Yeah one of those nights! And to top it off it was dark out!

So only the second hunt of the year for me; just getting back into the swing of things (see what I did there?)... And I'm still using this darn bounty hunter... That CTX 3030 can't get here fast enough!! But a quick report: last week: one whole zincholn...
This week:
One quarter, clad
Two dimes, still clad
One nickel
One top of a fence post, cheap galvanized
One zipper pull
And two chewed up pencil eraser metal pieces!

Hardest $0.50 I've ever earned! And I swear to goodness earthworms are made of metal!

something else I would consider, is a creative style of framing that could sandwich the bills between two pieces of glass so you could flip it over and look at both sides of the bills when you wanted to... It would make hanging the project difficult but it would be interesting... something to consider... I have a bunch of these, I might frame one like this now to see how I could create this effect.

Also be sure to use archival grade foam core for the mounting because it is acid free. You'll need to check and see it the plastic corners are PVC free, I'm not sure about that... and UV blocking glass isn't that bad and the size your projects should be, ask the frame shop is they have remnants that can fit what you want to accomplish... doing the framing yourself is pretty easy if you have someplace in your area that teaches classes... check Michael's craft stores as a possibility. If you were in the Missouri area, I would help you out with it... best hobby/skill I ever learned was how to frame...

Don't get me wrong... I'll still use eBay, but they are a crooked organization... paypal and eBay both being owned by the same parent company yet when I sell something on eBay, not only do I have to pay listing fees and selling fees on final prices, but then a fee on people paying with paypal too... I wish more of us would utilize forums such as this and sell our coins and currency to other collectors without big evil corporate getting half of the money that we sell things for. Listen, I know what the intent is for this page, it is about passing knowledge back and forth and learning, but that doesn't mean that this couldn't be a place for collectors to come together and buy and sell items they have been looking for. Moderators/Admins - The rules you have put in place on restrictions for buy/sell/trade/wants, don't help in making this forum stronger in education, it actually hurts because less people are likely to stay on here and participate because you are splitting their focus between here (where they can learn something) and another site (where they are leaving you to go buy what they want)... I think it is time for a reformation...

I got a good deal on this one and about 12 more uncut 4-note sheets in $1, $2, and $5... But I liked that this one was Boston star notes from 1976!

Ok, here are the options and my decision variables...

first the variables...
1. Cost vs. Benefit (obvious reasons)
2. User friendliness
3. Adjustability to changing search conditions
* Bonus: if you have personal experience one way or another with either model

Now the two choices:
1. Garrett AX Pro
2. Minelab CTX 3030

I like the features of both of these (at least on paper...) but I have this lingering question of; Do I spend the big bucks up front and not have to upgrade, or do I buy something that is only a couple steps above what I already use and "grow" into it and keep upgrading?

Garrett detectors are always dependable and in demand, and Minelab seems to be mines ahead in additional technologies... built in GPS and wireless capabilities are pretty tempting... can you imagine being able to track where you have been so you don't miss spot where you are searching? ok ok ok its a lot to think about, lets hear your opinions!

I'm looking for a MD hunt buddy... I am stationed at Ft Leonard Wood at the moment and would like to find someone to help me in starting out on my MD hobby. I have training in metal detectors but not in the art of going on a hunt. I own a detector but I am sure not the greatest but a decent lower level one. If there is someone in the Rolla, Dixon, Waynesville, Lebanon, or Lake of the Ozarks area, I would love to meet up for some MD mentorship. Let me know.

I am thinking about doing some panning and metal detecting for gold in the coming year and I was wondering if anyone here has had any luck with that, and where... I am going to be moving to North Carolina next summer and, although it isn't a gold rush state, it has had a long history of gold and I am thinking about recreationally trying out a few rivers and creeks in some of the state and national forest lands around where some of the historic gold finds were. I am currently living in Missouri and was thinking I would see if anyone around me knew of any places in the adjoining states to try my hand at panning before next year... any suggestions?

Ok so I am posting my newest currency acquisition because I think it is funny, not because I think it is some really unique bill... I got a wild hair up my butt the other day to get together a Canadian currency collection so I found this one on eBay... It's a 2004 series $20 bill printed in 2011... I won the auction for $11.50 and free shipping! Can't beat that deal!
