To be honest, I never liked it when the U.S. starting producing coins that carried the likeness of actual people instead of Liberty.I'd prefer it if we went back to that.

I had to vote no because we have reached the point where I cannot think of a single viable metal that can be produced at or below one cent. The ones being made now get toasted just by pocket use in no time. We gave up the half cent. Looks like its time to get rid of the cent too. BTW, I'd fully support the U.S. Mint picking up the slack by getting rid of the dollar bill and switching to dollar coins only!

The proof nickels begin produced by the San Francisco Mint do NOT have any silver content. Is that a correct statement on my part?

The silver coins could always be sold as "scrap" or "junk" silver. There is a whole market for that.

There are a fair number of posts on this forum about bad coins on eBay and while the vast majority are legitimate, someone with lesser experience might be nervous about buying from there, or even selling if they fear being accused of selling a fake coin. It sounds like this seller doesn't have a lot of experience and does not have the knowledge to answer a lot of questions about the coin.

Back in early days I sold a worn coin from the 1700's that I misidentified through error. The buyer gave me holy heck about the mistake and even though I fully refunded his purchase and paid for the return, he was so nasty it was a long time before I ever felt comfortable enough to sell there again.

Hi jpbone. I did not know of the existence of Desert Dansco. I usually bought from Wizard but they were out of stock. Oh well. Live and learn.

CLS12, I meant to say the Whitman album was in two volumes and more expansive. Thanks for the correction.

Ordered mine today off eBay. $35 which includes shipping. Been reading some of the other posts. For those who really want an expansive type set album, I agree Intercept Shield is the way to do go, even though you need to fill two volumes. I'm going to very happy with just a one volume type set album. It's going to take awhile to fill!

The answer to original post is simple: banks are there to serve their customers only and not the general public. Sorry if that sounds harsh. I used to work for a bank as teller in my youth.

My only problem with the Morgan is that it has such a large flat surface and is therefore easily marred by even the slightest scratch.

I have seen Morgans in the MS range that looked, to my naked eye, absolutely horrible. The eye appeal factor was zero despite the grade.

ArrowsandRays nailed it. I have had so many experiences with graders reversing themselves I have grown to question the validity of most professionally graded coins.

Any system is subjective to a degree, but the current system is extremely so.

I'd keep the nickel for rounding purposes on taxes. The nickel still has its uses, IMO.

Personally, ALL of our coinage is due for some serious updating. Spend a few bucks and get some beautiful dies cast (the opposite of our ghastly presidential dollars)and put a variety of lady liberties back on the coins.

I'm sure the Treasury has been watching Canada to see how it has gone there. So far, it appears to have caused no undeserved benefit to anyone. The rate of tax collection has been on par with the pre-cent abolition.

I personally would have have no problem adopting the same plan and therefore keeping the nickel in production, but cease production of the cent.

Also, I have been a big supporter of doing away with the dollar bill and replacing it with a dollar coin. It makes sense on so many levels.

Cashless Sweden And Coin Collecting

I know there are those beating the "cashless" drum, even in the United States. I just do not see that happening. So many transactions all over the world rely on cash and the public still demands it in a big way.

However, I do worry about the future of coin collecting. As most of the world coins being printed for circulation are purely "blah" in their appearance (in my humble opinion)and the young are getting more used to using debit cards, the desire for coin collecting might well slip as time goes on. Given the fact that the baby boomers look like they are starting to sell off their collections and/or bequeathing them to offspring (who promptly sell the collection) also does not bode well.

And lastly, and I have to say this, I have run into too many dealers who are unpleasant to deal with. They are neither welcoming, nor accommodating, and they tend to overprice their wares. I know there are nice, helpful dealers out there, but I am finding too few of them.

Don't mean to ruffle any feathers with this post, but I do feel some concern about the hobby. To be honest though, it hasn't stopped my collecting. I turn 50 next year, so I'm not sure where that places me.

None of the current US coins. No Lincolns, no Jeffersons, no Rosie's, no Washingtons, no Kennedys and no dollars after the peace dollar (with all respects, JBuck).

To me they are uninspired. They almost have an industrial quality about them. I guess it's just the antiquarian in me...

Its a good first collection to have but do not anticipate they will have any serious numismatic value in your lifetime, because I highly doubt they will. They would make a nice family heirloom. With so many of them made and in circulation, and with so many people collecting them, there will be little collector demand for a very long time. But that in no way should prevent you from enjoying them.
