This is not the token as the beaver was pointed the other way and shaped more like a horizontal oval with pronounced square feet. The beaver is in the center and there were no other (at least that I could see) writing or figures on the coin. Just a beaver in the middle.
Does make me think Hudson Bay is in the right direction.
It looks like a silver coin with a beaver in the middle. As the show is about the frontier in Canada, I assumed that if such a coin exists this would be the place to ask.
What is the date- I think it might be Year 28 or 29 by process of elimination from Ebay.
On which side is the date- I don't know which is the reverse or the obverse. How do I read the date?- I have a Standard catalog and they list ordinary Chinese, official and commercial- which is which
I went to the national coin show in Chicago last year. I brought with me 4 coins Canadian coins that I wanted to find out more about. The dealers around me know less about the Canadian coins than I do. One was a 1938 Canadian nickel that I thought might possibly be a proof because it looked so much "shinier" than the other UNC ish nickels I had to compare it to.
After asking several dealers who seemed to specialize in Canadian coins I was directed to "the guy". I showed him my coin and his response was - "if you can't tell a proof from an AU coin - I can't help you". His name was Brian Somebody with dark hair and glasses. Other dealers I had shown the coin thought it would have been the proof.
I guess what I am trying to say is I love the Canadian series but with the lack of information available (including realistic pricing) and especially the abundance of twits as dealers (He was selling coins there- I did not leave until I spent the 10k I brought with me- just not at his table) I can see anyone being turned off by the hobby.
Every time one of you dealers embarrasses a parent who brings in their child and asks too many beginner questions
Every time one of you low ball the crap out of a person bringing in coins to sell or "down" the collection they are putting together
Every time you try to carry yourselves superior to a potential customer
------you are hurting the hobby for the rest of us
I have found only 2 in buying all of my dealers Canadian at face X full exchange rate. Been doing this for a few years. He only searches it for silver so the rest is mine. Best score was 3 1923 small cents and 1 1922. I did go back and let him know the next time I went in - he told me thanks for letting him know and he did not want anything for them.
I think you did very well. I would not crack out the 1881 s or submit for a CAC. The obverse rim appears to be damaged at 2 and there is something going on at 10 o'clock.
I have had luck buying them at my local coin shops. I usually pay between 80% to 100% of face and have to sort the copper and nickel out. Last time I bought them I got an AU 1938 nickel.
Please help me out with the condition and what is going on with the S in States. Through a loop it looks like a solder drip and looks original to the coin.
