I think it looks good for the first time sand casting. I haven't tried that yet. I have been bouncing in between refining and melting some scrap.

While refining, the larger piece of gold, I used silver for the inquarting process. Inquarting is where you reduce the gold content down to about 25%. If the gold content is lower than 6K you wind up with a really fine dust that is a pain to work with. If the gold content is higher than 9K, the structure of the gold itself will prevent any acid from coming in contact with the base metals preventing removal.
So one of the biproducts of gold refining is silver nitrate. And copper is used to drop the silver back out of solution, called silver cement.Because it looks kinda like cement.

I'll filter this off and melt up the near pure silver in a melt dish.

Purple is the color of gold when coming out of solution.
Some where it must have had a drop of acid fall on it.
Do they use an acid in the die polishing room for some reason?

Great to see & hear about industry succeeding.

What a toy!

That is a lot of copper coins in the price of that machine + delivery.

Wishing your nephew all the best. Looks like he is fully on track.

Great thread! Keep us in touch.

He started off selling Wheat Cents in the VG range and grew that into the copper site He has now.We are pretty proud with what He has accomplished on His own (well, along with His Wife and a couple of employees).

Excuse me for being nosy, but what's a press like that cost?

Hehehe,well...I haven't 'pressed' Him on that issue yet.Sorry I couldn't let that one go by. When I see Him next time,I'll ask. He may not tell Me, but I'll ask.

I'd love to have this! Please update us with images of the strikes. I'd REALLY like to see this in operation and see any resulting "errors" that might happen on purpose.

Yeah, I would too!
I'll try and get back up there in the next few weeks for some more pictures. They live about 2.5 hours away,so,I'll have to get with the ole lady and drag Her along.(JK)
As far as errors are concerned,I don't know who might try something like that.(insert rolls eyes emojie here)

Got a text from My Sister this morning with some new pictures and it looks like the press has showed up.

I don't know how much it weighs, but from the looks of the lift truck,it must be quite a bit.

Getting it set in place.

Adjustment/ trial runs?

The Nephew playing with His new power toy,and
so production begins. When I'm back up that way hopefully I'll get to squish some discs too.

Currently, He has a Ebay store that sells a wide variety of copper rounds. He's having to buy the rounds, blanked and upset, and then minted. One of the ways He can cut the cost of the middle man out is to mint His own.
He's planning on eventually doing 1 oz bars,5oz and 10oz rounds in copper, but after that, I'm guessing that it depends on how business goes. If He could make a living at it ,I'm sure He would.

As I understand it, there was a hang up with shipping. Something about a shield for the feeding mechanism needed too be built/installed, and of course, dealing with covid. All of which has been taken care of, and He was hoping for it to ship this week.
He has several dies (copy rights) for the copper one oz rounds. like the Flying Eagle Cent, Wheat Cents, a Liberty seated coin, ect.. I didn't notice if He had Walker or not. When He gets it up and running I'll go back and pay more attention next time to what He has. I could post a link, but I don't know if it's allowed.?

The Wife and I went up to see My Sister for Her birthday this past weekend, and while We were there, we stopped by My Nephew's shop.
He has a copper round store on Ebay. And from what Sis' tells Me He's doing pretty good at it.
Recently He bought out a mint in Ca, the press,die's,ect.. While waiting for the press too be shipped the dies are being used at another mint.
The floor had to be reinforced, so a 24" thick pad was cut and poured. This pad is needed not only for the weight of the press, but also for all of the vibration produced by the machine itself.

He tells Me the press runs off of air and showed Me His air compresser. It looked to to be about a 250/300 gal tank with a three phase motor setting on top.
At first, He said, they will only be doing 1oz rounds, and in the future, they will expand into doing 1oz bars,5 and 10oz rounds.

Maybe one day, if I refine enough gold, I could convince Him to mint some coins for Me.
When He does get His press in, I'll go back for some in operation pictures.

Very nice.About how much copper do you load it up with at one time?
How high do You have propane set at? What is Your lighting it up procedure?

When Mine came in the hose wouldn't screw onto the burner. I contacted them and they sent Me a new hose and burner, and a set of gloves. Which I thought was real nice of them.
Now I'm waiting for it to warm up outside so I can melt some wires I stripped.
With the copper bars I make, I'll probably just give 'em to My Nephew, who will soon be minting His own rounds.

I ordered their distillation outfit and 5 Pyrex beaker kit. They seem to be made of quality glass. They will go from boiling hot acid to throwing some ice into it no problem.
I also bought the stirring plate. It only measures 4.75"x4.75". A 1000ML beaker fits real nice on it,but I think it would be too small for Your 4000ML.

I still need to order some molds. Then I can start playing around with mine.

Did You get Your furnace yet? Have You had chance to play around with it yet?
I went ahead and bought one as well, but I'm going too order a smaller crusible for inquarting the gold. The 5Kg will be good for copper, but I think I would lose too much gold with one that big.
Getting ready for when I have My fume hood built. I have been making nitrate crystals in order to make My own nitric acid.I think they look really cool.

I was thinking gas, but if you have any suggestions on what has worked for you, I'd love to hear it. This furnace in particular has caught my eye

So far I've been trying to get the chemistry down in order to have something to melt, first, then worry about a furnace. But thanks for the link, I'll probably go with the same.
What little I have done so far I have used MAP gas for melting back to metal. Although I didn't get it hot enough (I was more worried about burning it up) the first time. It did RXF at .999 fine. Not bad just for some free computer scrap. Once I 'graduate' too doing 10K,14k,and 18k refining, silver refining will be a secondary process too do.

At this point I'd just be buying the acid, I don't think it'd be worth the added risk of making it. I'll likely start small next month with just buying a smelting furnace and PPE and just practice melting pure silver shot into bars/rounds to get that technique down. If that goes well I'll try refining.

Sounds like a plan.
What kind of furnace are You thinking of going with, gas or electric?
Over this past summer I've been messing a round with gold refining and getting all of the steps down. Just as I was becoming successful it has turned cold outside. So I've been getting the garage set up so I can work inside. It will be so nice not to have leaves falling on/in everything.
