Was able to score an upgrade today. Bought a stunning 1911 MS66 Liberty nickel. Looked at tons of them, this one was struck well, no distracting marks... and did pretty well on it I think... ($625). I will upload pics soon, and maybe by then I will have found a 1866 w/rays in minimum MS65..... That's gonna be a tall order..

Thanks for looking

I say good job! nothing screams "horrible" when I see the obverse, and as someone else already stated the reverse is easier to see. I love a good gamble!! come on sevens!

Thanks for the compliments guys. I'm on the hunt for MS66 Liberty Nickel and a MS64 or MS65 Shield with Rays. Of course it must have some character so I'm sure it will be a while!!

Finally after many years of searching and selecting the individual coins for it...It is now finished. I still have 2 coins to eventually upgrade, but all in good time. This set currently holds the 5th spot on PCGS registry's All TIME BEST. I hope to make it to at least number 2 once my 2 upgrades and "reconsiderations" all come through. I attached pictures of each one and why I choose that coin. I Hope you enjoy and feel free to share your opinions. There are a few scratches and marks in the pics and those are on the slabs themselves. This entire set will get the Trueview Imaging when sent up to my friends at PCGS. Thanks

1866 Shield Nickel With Rays PCGS MS63 (FUTURE UPGRADE)

I originally chose this coin because of the sharp strike on the stars and the slight rainbow tone when holding it in hand. This coin was struck when nickel was newer to US coins and they were still working out the kinks. A lot of these coins have very sloppy strikes and that was definitely a challenge finding one to meet my needs. This coin looks a lot better in hand, and in my opinion has a better eye appeal than a lot of the MS64 coins and even some 65s that I looked at. To me its what the coin looks like, not what the slab says. But, I will be upgrading this one hopefully soon to a 65 or if finances allow...a 66!

1882 Shield Nickel No Rays PCGS MS66

This coin spoke to me as soon as I saw it. The fields are a mirrored with golden tone throughout. Virtually free from any distracting marks, with a nice strike and great details on all. This coin may eventually get a "+" after "reconsideration" with PCGS. just a beauty!

1883 Liberty Nickel No Cents PCGS MS66 CAC (OLD HOLDER)

I looked at 1000 different coins to pick this one. This is a common date to get as so many people kept them as "Novelties" because of the status as "Racketeer Nickel" because of the lack of a denomination on it. This coin has all the characteristics I like: great golden colors, incredible strike, and absence of any distracting marks. It also has very cool die breaks on both the OBV and REV that give it a lot of individuality. This coin is houses in a Gen2 PCGS green holder with a Green CAC sticker on it. I may send this one in for "reconsideration" once, and if no increase I will just leave it alone.

1900 Liberty Nickel PCGS MS64 (1st GEN holder) (UPGRADE)

Not gonna draw this one out.... I bought this because it had a good look and it was too cheap for me to pass on... I will be upgrading this ASAP as this is the "black sheep" of the group and its low grade is a big factor why the set is only at 5.

1913 Buffalo Nickel Type 1 PCGS MS67 CAC

This is a nice coin...Just plain a and simple. The coin has a flawless strike, with mirrored fields and rainbow toning on both sides. It also has that golden hue that I personally like. Again, I looked at a lot of coins and finally settled on this one. The runner up was a MS67+ coin but there were a few little spots on the reverse that killed it for me. This is one of my favorites to look at, and it is 1000 times more beautiful in hand.

1938D Buffalo Nickel PCGS MS67

This coin is just as beautiful as its predecessor. The coin has a rainbow hue on both sides, with very sharp details and lovely mirrored fields. This coin beat out quite a few other 67s and even a 68 in overall eye appeal to me.

1944D Jefferson War Nickel PCHS MS67

For the war nickel, there was no shortage of candidates. I eventually settled on this one for the golden color, and for the lack of any distracting marks. The numerous MS67s, 67+, and even a 68 I found with the rainbow toning I like, all of them either had a flaw I couldn't live with, or were priced at insane levels for their grade.

1994P Jefferson PCGS MS69 (Old Gen2 Holder)

This is a quick explanation.....This one is affordable in MS69, but very stupid in MS70. I don't really care about this one, so I put little thought into it for the registry. If I was showing this collection in person to someone, I would substitute a 1941S PCGS MS66+ I have with 1000% more character than this one. But....Alas for the registry I needed the highest I could get. One day I may just have to bite the bullet and buy that MS70!

For these last 2...I just bought the highest grades I could afford. They are modern strikes so they don't really do much for me.... But the grades are the 2005P is MS69 Satin Finish, and the 2006P is a SP68FS. Nice coins, but just fillers for this set in my opinion.

I hope you have enjoyed my set. I originally picked this set because I love the buffalo Nickel design, and to try a full date and variety run in MS on PCGS is very time and financially consuming.... I enjoyed searching for the coins for it, and hope to take the #1 spot eventually. Please leave me your feedback on it and any recommendations or suggestions you may have.

Hello all. I just finished readingtthisbook "Pleasure and Profit" and I have to say it is wonderful. I have been a collector for 20 years, and this book opened my eyes to a lot. The author takes you through his typeset and shows his cost and eventual auction prices for his whole collection. He does not sugar coat his mistakes, and really makes you appreciate the coins beyond just their monetary value. Any new collectors, or one who is looking to become more advanced in the hobby should read the book. I truely feel it has already paid for itself a hundred fold in just my recent purchases, and how it has altered my buying habits. Hope you read it!

I think I would sell one a year, maximize your returns. You make it known to the world, and then come taxes, and other vultures trying to get a piece. Slowly selling them until you have a big blob of money, then privately sell the rest in lots to the top tier collectors. Unforrunately, I would have yo save the best dozen for my personal cabinet.....

Great stories. Sometimes hearing about the special place a coin or the memory of the relative who started us puts the whole thing into perspective. Thank you everyone who has shared! And keep them coming!

I haven't seen a post like this on here, but please excuse me if there is one already.

What coin or coins got you started collecting? Did you find an interesting coin in change, buy one as a kid or inherit a collection? I hope to get some unique answersand sTories.

Mine is:

My grandmother started me collecting with her old Whitman Buffalo nickel book. It was only about 1/4 full (I think she lost interest). I started from there but immediately began my own wheat cent book when I was about 10.

My grandfather worked for a vending company in the 40s and would find alot of great stuff kids would put into the machines....including a few half eagles. So when inherited her collection when she passed, I acquired alot of interesting stuff. My personal favorite coin is a 1827 half dollar she gave me for my 12th birthday. Its on here under grading help.

I hope to hear all of your stories. Thanks

Not trying to restoke the fire. The moderators here do a great job of keeping the peace. Just bothersome that people had to tell him why his post was either repiticious or "none of his business". I will leave it be.

Wow.....I just clicked this exspecting to see people posting what coin meant the most to them....whether its in the monetary sense or sentimental. I didn't see the post that the author was reprimanded for, but wow. I feel compelled to state that people bashing him for this post topic, and being rude with him is pretty sad. If you don't want to participate, then ddon't....no need to be rude. And I understand why people get worried posting high end stuff for fear of theft. But this thread was put up to showcase the coins people cherish. If you have a $20000 coin and are fearful....pick a different one or don't post. It just seems there's always a few people who feel the need to crap on others. Just sad.

Oh, my most valuable coin is my 1827 bust half from my Grandma. Worth about $120. Priceless to me.

Very sorry to hear about your loss. I had my cat Token for many years, through alot of jobs, houses, and girlfriends. He was my only "constant" in many years of changes. Glad you have some good pics of him, preserve the memories. My view is, Pets give us all they have to give, their companionship and their lives to hold in our hands. Gotta rember the good times!

And that is a beautiful dime! You could name your proof set "The Hobbes Collection"!

I personally like to pick out raw coins, then certify myself. It just beings me extra satisfaction when I buy a raw coin, submit it myself, and end up with a certified coin that I have only 1/2 its value into. But, gold is tricky, and ive personally been burned 4 times last year with coins coming back "cleaned" or the dreaded "ex jewelry". Take your time, and only buy when it feels right. Good luck on the set!
