The Royal Mint is selling the updated King Charles 2023 effigy Britannia as of today. Looks like the transition has happened.

Marcus Aurelius Denarius. AVRELIVS CAESAR AVG PII F, bare head right / COS II, Spes walking left, holding flower and raising hem of robe. RSC 102; Sear 4783

On wildwinds this looks like the closet match.

Hi, I previously posted this coin to understand who was on it and the type of coin. That much was answered, I then wanted to check the size/weight etc as the finished condition isn't like my others where the lines on the metal move from the centre to the edge.
The diameter is 17mm, which is spot on. However the weight is 2.45g, I think the average for a Marcus Aurelius Denarius is 3.7g. I know there may be fluctuation in weight because of how they used to create the coins, but this variance seems high.
I'm seeking your opinions and knowledge to put my mind at rest please.

@ttkoo I need to work on my photography as it looks even better in the flesh.
I'm happy to hear that it's a light strike, I genuinely believed it was wear on the coin.

@sel_69l I've ordered a copy of that book just now.

Thanks both

I'm really happy to hear that name.
I collect a varied assortment of coins and recently got an ngc Gordian III coin and was looking for an Aurelius to add to my ancients.
Long story short, work takes over and then I find time to organise after buying coins. I've had a few now where I lost the descriptions, this has been a productive weekend.

Thankyou so much @Biancasdad

Hi all, I've been going through my collection recently and now trying to write up and organise what I've gathered over some time.
I have this coin and no detail with it, any help would be great fully received. Even if its knowing who is on the obverse I'll search wildwinds for it.

@sel_69l Absolutely incredible, you're a wealth of knowledge.
I think you were right to begin with, it's interesting to think how many variants they may have created during that time frame.
Currently going through my collection and this coin brought me to a stop, now I have some understanding and something to write next to its description thanks to you.

The reference you quoted from, was that an online source or book you own? For future ref.

Thankyou again appreciate your time and effort.

Hi both, just to be sure. Are you both suggesting I put this coin in a acetone bath and see what comes of it?
Never used this stuff before, will search it up first.

I've got this 1891 liberty nickel, just wondering if this looks like some acid damage or similar to you guys?
This coin doesn't hold value to me, just intrigued if anyone's seen something similar before.

Hi both, so the coin weighs correctly so there's not much excess or variance there.
It could be a silver dip, I'm guessing like a jewellery dip. It'd be a shame if that is the case, but maybe someone was experimenting.
The coins certainly not worth the work to try and make it appear or be a higher grade for some level of financial gain as its just not one of those coins.

I'll add a screenshot of something that spurred my original convo, where did they get this info from I wonder?

@sel_69l, this has been an incredible reply.
I to suspected some level of cleaning, I checked the outer rim to see if it matched the obv/rev in terms of signs of aging. I couldn't see anything obvious.

I genuinely started suspecting it had been spray painted due to the finish I can see infront of me and lack of similar finishes to compare the coin to of the same year. But dismissed this, mainly down to the coin really not being worth this level of effort.

I'll try and get some rim measurements to see if there is some variation(veneers). Also I'm guessing weight may also slightly be off aswell following this train of thought.

Thankyou for your response, it has been most educational and helpful.

Hi, I've had the coin for some time now and only really had time to have a closer look at it. It came in a lcgs inner holder or similar(as pictured). In the flesh this coin looks like a pure Matt finish, but I can't find any detail regarding a 1920 Matt Finish Florin.
However I did stumble upon something saying that in 1920 until late 1922, the florins had a duller sheen on them and it wasn't until late 1922 they changed the alloys around to create a shinier coin.

Is this the same for all .500 coinage 1920-1922?

I hope these pictures do justice to the finish of the coin, it looks truly Matt in finish. Is this the same for your coinage of the same year?

This coin looks uncirculated, however the 3 lions on the upper reverse have had there faces rubbed?

@ttkoo Lighting in photos can be a nightmare to judge a coin by, it's a nice coin. I love coinage from Victoria's era, some of my personal favourite designs.
I don't have a good eye/knowledge of die cracks, but can see the neck line on the reverse. You've a keen eye for detail.

@ttkoo The halfcrown with the toning and finish is one of my favourites I have to visually look at, beautiful work and nice ageing.

Maybe it needs to be regraded, ms(mint smile)-65

Another recent purchase is this 1893 Maundy twopence, the rainbow toning sold it.
