It looks pretty common for the date; I find the 1968 and 1969 nickels tend to lack sharpness which may be attributable to the ODV/RDV for that period. Lots of luster left!

I see a lamination issue as you note, but also some circulation damage. A fun find for sure and one that can hook a new collector. Welcome to the mix here!

Bar doubling is very common as GrapeCollects suggest. Some years appear to be less active than others...haven't looked at 1998 in a long while. But I suspect there are tons of unlisted bars for multiple years. It is a consolation prize, but a WAM has some demand...the bars do not.

Thanks for the fair warning. Still, it's a great coin!! Mine has a weird alloy thing going on the obverse, but for an $0.08 coffee can find...I'll take it with the alloy issue. With a lam it's still a no-brainer.

I have found these on cents, nickels and dimes (found this one today searching for 2016 DDRs). I posted the nickel here a few years back and the consensus was a lathe mark. These circles appear at the center area of the coin, which might suggest that the conical rod had a grove that wasn't removed during finishing or obliterated during die creation. Reading Wexler's notes on the 2004, there seems to be disagreement amongst the error/variety experts. It would be nice to know for sure what this type of phenomenon is attributed to. While this seems to occur often enough amongst a few denominations, I save them.

Clearer pictures would be appreciated. In the meantime, have a look here: https://www2.briansvarietycoins.com...gs/view/1489

There are several variants over a number of dates, so see if this is what you have in hand. Let us know.

I took a quick look at Coppercoins and Wexler's sites and didn't see a listing for a DDR. I also don't see anything on the coin that looks like doubling. What are you seeing or suggest is doubled?

Looks like a misaligned obverse and a collar error/mark on the reverse. No real premium I think.

I've heard of the hollow 'penny' where a Zincoln is put into acid to dissolve the zinc and then a dime inserted into the hollow cent. Since the copper plate is real thin, it can be rolled and the image of the dime begins to show through. Are we sure that this isn't what we are looking at here? My guess: would weigh a bit more than a normal dime but within mint tolerances.

My thoughts are consistent with Tanman's: old circumferential damage that is worn smooth.

More likely released. Like an impaired proof, folks will liberate a damaged coin and put it into circulation (although it was never destined for it). There is a slight chance that the wrong planchets made it into the business strike hoppers, but I think it's rather slim. Normally there would be some press on the matter and alerted coin community.

I haven't been to CCF for quite some time...life gets busy in spots. I scrolled back through around 15 pages; some really terrific finds folks!! Lots of older coins (including that IHC 1859) and lots of older dates for the LWCs, many with mint marks. And a few small hoards of Canadian cents. I love the success many of you are having and the pictures; if I can't CRH myself, I enjoy seeing the pics of all your fun finds!! Happy hunting folks!!

Here's a reference to associated value according to grade.

http://coppercoins.com/diesearch.php

Those values are fairly hard to fetch, but you can expect to pay close to the listed numbers on the better varieties that folks seek. Your variety is a better variety that folks want. However, having been cleaned, I suspect that you could discount the value by 2/3rds. One of your fellow coin enthusiasts offers MS details; I'm not there myself due to the grainy texture left by the cleaning. But if they are right, then $40 is probably a fair price for that 'grade' of coin as offered by Coppercoins. And if you want that variety in your collection as you look for a better coin, then keep it. Otherwise, you can send it back. Good luck!!
