I picked out a worthy successor to my departed 1960D Franklin Half. Snagged it for face and it's been sitting in my meager stack--if you want to call it that--for the last several years. It was the most toned half in there, with the obverse toned golden with fingerprints in it. This makes both of my silver pieces only 40% but still have a nice and bright jingle, and together they only cost me a whopping $1.50. I didn't feel like consigning any of my few 90% halves to pocket duty. He'll happily ride around with the silver Ike and Irish penny.

There is an episode of Little House on the Prairie, I believe it was called "The Richest Man in Walnut Grove," where Charles has hit some hard times and all the family pitches in to help make ends meet. Toward the end they are all pooling their earnings for Pa to count, and in the pile of money you can very clearly see a worn Morgan dollar and some Seated coinage. It's a bit of an irony because the episode takes place a couple years before the Morgan was introduced. |

Welp, now I am down to just the 1971S Ike and the 1962 Irish penny. My 1960D Franklin half decided to take leave of me while on vacation last week. It is either in the cabin (not likely - wife looks carefully around everything when she packs up), on the ground by the pool, buried somewhere in the car, or one of my kids snatched it. I hold out hope it turns up somewhere - I had some good meaningful wear going on with it. Meanwhile, I told this story to one of my regular LCS guys who had a table set up at the local show last weekend, and he threw me a newer AU 1960 Franklin for $10. I may toss it in the pocket, but it seems too nice of a coin to do that with; the old one was a circulated one that I snagged for face, which is my preference for pocket pieces whenever possible. |

In the 2005 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the money Charlie picks up out of the street to buy his golden ticket-winning Wonka bar appears to be a Peace Dollar. |

All are looking good and I always love a family or historical connection. Ive posted elsewhere here that I inherited my great great grandfather's pocket piece, an 1851 large cent, back in 2015. It's very corroded, worn, and dark toned. I thought about either adding it to my pocket collection or purchasing a nicer example from the same year, but ultimately decided against either for the time being. |

It's been a minute for me...
This 1971-S 40% Ike has been with me since late Dec 2020. It was a coin machine find at work a few years earlier.

1960-D Franklin since April 2020.
The story behind this one is that my dad turned 60 in April 2020. For his birthday, I sent him a 1960 proof set and a circulated 1960D Franklin and told him to put it in his pocket, with instructions about carrying a piece of silver from your birth year for good luck. He says it does for him. I had a couple extra 1960D in my stash at the time so I threw this one in my pocket starting on his 60th birthday.
Not pictured: 1962 Irish penny (on me almost daily) and a 1962 Mexico peso (most days).
The 1921 S Morgan and 1933 half crown are locked up in the SDB and will be brought out again at some point in the future. |

How To Collect World Coins?

My first relationship with coin collecting 20+ years ago was mostly foreign face value coins that my relatives either had laying around or brought back from travels (one of my aunts is a retired Navy nurse who has been stationed all over the world, and who has taken cruises just about everywhere there is to do so). Almost nothing of any value, but some looked cool to a 9 year old, especially the bimetallic ones.
Fast forward to 2013 when I got back into collecting again. While I mainly do US, I have also taken an interest in foreign, but this time with a focus.
It started with the Elizabeth II Lsd coinage from the UK (decimal coins do nothing for me), which branched out to any UK back to Victoria (maybe in the future will try to go further back). Then from there to any world coin (mostly silver) with an image of the British monarch.....Canada (a big focus), Austraila, NZ, etc. From there I have also added Irish coinage, again with a focus on Lsd, and a little continental European silver coinage here and there.
Unrelated to that is a huge interest I took in the last year or so in Mexican silver coinage, since they have a wonderful tradition of large silver coins. I think this was kind of spurred by the fact that my LCS guy pretty much gives me any of the 10% Pesos that come in, since no one else wants them and he can't profitably melt them.
I also look forward in the future to getting into some more Latin American silver here and there.
I have very little interest in east Asian coinage. If I can't read it, I generally don't collect it. |

I have bought and sold through here with no issues.
I usually sell my junk silver at the LCS but I'm sure I could get more for it elsewhere....it's just the easiest avenue typically. |

When I sell it is usually just junk silver. I look up his trading sheet online so I know what to expect pricewise going in there. Have been to the LCS a number of times since covid. Don your mask and you'll be fine. |

For me it's the nicest condition that my budget will allow at the time. For series about 1940 to present I will only incorporate uncirculated into my 7070 because of availability. Older series that are more difficult to acquire in unc will follow the criteria above. I have several coins in my 7070 with holes or other issues, where they are in a condition that would otherwise be out of my price range were it not for the flaws. |
