I primarily metal detect on beaches.
A lot depends on the metal detector you have and the time of year. Depending on your detector you will be able to detect the dry sand and/or wet sand.
If you are interested in the dry sand stick to the "towel line", volleyball courts, and as close as your detector can get to the wet sand.
If you are interested in the wet sand, try to work the area between the low tide and high tide line. You need to move slowly as to not miss deep targets.
This time of year you want to wait for a good winter storm to move the sand levels, uncovering old targets. This past week I went out after a winter storm and dug many old coins and got a tarnished silver ring.
Good luck! |

Hello,
It really depends on the type of hunting and where you hunt. Also, what size are you using currently. Are we talking about hunting playgrounds? If so a 4' "sniper coil" is good for trashy areas. Although, I like the biggest coil possible as it allows me to cover more ground. |

Although you have already made up your mind it seems, I rarely bend over much, my back is never an issue (usually my shoulder). Depending on where you plan on metal detecting (I am primarily a beach hunter) if you find a target, I get down on my knees and dig from there.
As for the Garrett Ace 350, thats a great deal, if you decide to get it, inspect it carefully for wear and tear with special attention on the coil and battery compartment. |

Heres what causes most people to stop metal detecting: High expectations.
You look on forums and see all the amazing things people find and when you go to the park and find a few bottlecaps and a penny, you can get discouraged pretty quick. Metal detecting is just like most hobbies, you get what you put into it. If you do the research and learn your machine, it will pay off.
When I first started, finding any coin in the ground amazed me. |

Newer model detectors are just refined versions of older ones. Its not like the technology has changed dramatically over the years. Newer units will have better sensitivity adjustments, discrimination, etc.
Just remember with older machines, if it was used improperly (moisture inside components, or poorly stored) they can run into problems with the circuit boards. Just be sure to take a good look at the detector (coils, control box) and make sure its in good shape. |

Greetings,
The ACE 150 is a great beginner metal detector. Others in the same category are the Bounty Hunter Tracker IV, Tesoro Compadre, and the Fisher F2.
As for beach metal detecting, instead of getting a pin pointer think about getting a beach sand scoop. You can start with one of the hand held ones, there are many on amazon. |
