I've worked in print for allot of years and it seems to me that what you have there is either a defect caused by someone intending to remove the black ink purposely. Or you have what is called in the print business ``the make readies``. (This is the printing presses first few hundred sheets of paper that get thrown away, this used for the printing press to get the densities of the ink up to the right standard). Was it printed by del LA rue? I don't know much about Australian currency.

Hi Masis.

Really nice to hear from you and Ben, I do hope you are well.

Thanks for the info. As always its nice to hear from the pro's.

That makes allot of sense actually. I have around 70 coins found in a 55 year span from my granddads farm (metal detecting) etc, most of the coins range from the byzantine(ish) era 270 - 360 AD or there abouts (just off the top of my head).
Check out the dates for the ones my granddad actually bagged and tagged

Wow thanks Ben. Appreciate your help!

You guys really love your green crusty coins !

The second one down from the original images (Like the coin you have) is really cool would love to know what it is, almost looks like someone standing with there arms out (not enough detail on the coin left annoyingly.

I think I must have quite a few of the Barb coins, they are allot more delicate compared to my hard bronze coins. Its like the angle saxons was making them from clay and covering them with metal lol (if it was them)!.

I like the 3rd one down of the images bellow can't make the back out too well but I think its the wolf & romulus & remus? Haven't a clue who the emperor is?

Hi guys,

So I've ben going through my coins and trying to identify them which for the most I have.
Its been allot of excellent fun, but I have hit a wall with some of the coins, and wondered if you guys would be so kind as to see if there are any here that you could identify for me, would be very great full. I do have about 30 more coins which have been battered.

Also if you are interested (I know they are not coins) I have attached a picture of an arrow head, spear, and key, all Roman from around the constantine era (East of Britain) for anyone who may be interested .

Sorry pictures are not great. Also sorry about the dates can't turn them off of the bloody camera Grrrr.

Thanks guys.
Richard

Nice coin. Silly question, or more ignorant, why would you want to deteriorate the coin? It looks fantastic.

Thanks so much Masis I have just bought the book on eBay £12.00.
Looks like an interesting read I may have to get a roman coin book to identify the rest (all) of my shrapnel do you have any recommendations?

I can see how this can be a very addictive, interesting & rewarding hobby !

Hi Ben.
Thanks so much for the valuable information you & Masis have given me I really can't thank you two enough.

Ive not had them in distilled water. The other coins I showed on page 1 were put in vinegar for a few days. But the rest of my coins are uncleaned which is a good thing by my standards, hehe.

Your going to tell me off for using vinegar (sorry).

Is distilled water the way forward for cleaning coins. There are so many methods that people use. I have even seen someone on youtube putting coins into olive oil for months at a time?

Thanks Ben

Hi Guys.
Do you use any kind of software to create your own personal Library?

Something along the lines of you buy a new coin (or find), then you add it to a piece of software (database) along with a picture of the front & back?

Emperor: caesar IMAGE FRONT IMAGE BACK
Material: Gold
Diameter: 20mm or Some Imperial size thingy (just an example)
Circa: 46-44 B.C
Obtained: 29/04/2013 or 04/29/2013 U.S
Condition: Fair
Etc
Etc

Just interested if something exists, if not I may be able to create a simple piece of software free for anyone to use, for personal or business use, think it would be a good tool.

Let me know your thoughts, you guys are the experts!

Cheers Guys

Richard

Wow.. Thanks so much Masis that's fantastic! You really know your stuff. How long have you been collecting?

What do you think of this coin, its tiny about 15mm diameter smallest coin I have ever seen. The back looks a bit violent

Hi Ben.
Its not a Chi Rho reverse. I have attached a picture for you. (not very good) sorry!

I think I am going to keep these little beauties for the kids as it was my granddads 55-60 years hard work with metal detectors etc on his farm. 99% of all the stuff he found went to the museum all the unwanted stuff which was found to be insignificant and found bit by bit he was aloud to keep.

Shame I didnt learn anything about it from him! Especially with him being a field director on various occasions on digs.
He used to tell me stories about chasing night hawkers (illegal metal detecter people) off his fields lol!

Thank you guys. I can assure you these are not reproductions lol. I cleaned them which probably wasn't the greatest of ideas. All was found metal detecting in a old roman village in uk.

Hi Guys.

Im not 100% sure if they are totally identifiable & have no idea if its gold bronze? I'm assuming they are bronze.

Any help would be so much appreciated.
