1989 50c Coin Found In Circulation - MSo Or?

Some years (not just 50¢ either) were never released into circulation but were still made for mint sets. They do, for whatever reason, occasionally find their way into circulation.
Not worth a lot but interesting to find. I have sold some such on eBay and they fetch similar prices to uncirculated ones. I think collectors who make up sets of circulating coins like them as that then allows NCLT years to also be represented in a set -the philosophy is that an uncirculated one is not 'kosher' but one actually found from circulation is fine.

I have even found a couple of proof coins from circulation.

Are NCLT Coins Really Legal Tender?

Australian NCLT coins are legal tender and banks will cash them in at face value. Every Australian coin, except holey dollar and dump (which have been demonetised)is legal tender.
That means banks should also cash in pre-decimal but you might find a reluctance there if you tried it.
They certainly do cash in 1¢, 2¢ and 1966 round 50¢. I have often been able to obtain those from banks -paper notes too- saves them the trouble of packing them to return (minimum quantities apply for that).

The rewards points scam would not apply in Australia because NCLT issues are sold at a premium to face value.

Edit P.S. I have also occasionally been able to get $200 gold coins this way too. They are worth around double face value.
Many bank tellers now know the value of some of these coins and will buy them for themselves.

Here are two I use;
•NEW ZEALAND 2014 "The John Bertrand" PREMIER COIN & BANKNOTE CATALOGUE by ANTHONY W GRANT. You used to be able to buy it direct from John but, with new editor I am not sure.
Looks like eBay.au is not accepting this link to an item so try item number 161022347855 instead.
•2014 Pocket Guide to Australian Coins and Banknotes by Greg McDonald A new edition is due in March I believe.

A newer edition of Renniks is also an option.

All of these are readily available in Australia.
Not sure about suitable recommendations for tokens.

Hi Matt,
I am in Gulgong, NSW. Most of the $1 coins I get for noodling are from the collection of the washing machines at the local laundromat and the caravan park laundry.
As a result many have bad stains and deposits of blue/green scum -laundry detergent is rather savage. A soak in warm water, followed by acetone usually helps.

how many coins had you gone through?

In my case 65,000 coins, or thereabouts. I have seen reports elsewhere ranging from 45,000 to nearly 105,000 before one is found.
Regardless of the number that makes it a very hard to find coin.

I have had brand new coins in Armaguard roll and bags. But sometimes there will be an old coin, or two, in with them.
I think it just depends what they load in the machine and, as one lot of mint issue coins is nearly through, then the next lot loaded on top could be a bag of bank returns.

So, just sit and wait now Walter.

Picking the big movers can be a tricky business. I will note your suggestions and keep an eye on prices as long as I am around -could be fun.

I'm still looking. Maybe one day.
One sold recently on eBay for only $120! typical range is around $400 to $500 for reasonable ones.
High grade, slabbed ones have been fetching around $900 to well over $1000.

Don't forget there are Third Party Graders (long established and reputable) and some "Third Party Graders" (no comment -don't want to be accused of libel).

Some of the "lies" are not lies for some grading services -some dodgy ones out there.

I do, however, take your point. There is plenty of misinformation out there about this topic [and just about anything else you care to look up].

Moral is to be very careful with internet research;
•Don't believe everything you read
•Try to find trustworthy sources
•A good grasp of correct spelling and grammar is an asset for recognising biased opinions. Don't ask me why but there seems to be a high correlation (just like with spam and phishing emails).
•And, phrasing can be a clue -"The true facts about..." is a flag for me to peruse following content with a very cynical eye.

A tilted collar error is always well worth the price of admission.
I always look at the edges of coins, before I sort them "heads 'n' tails", when I grab a handful for noodling.

Well done!

How do you include an explanation when reporting an item?
Any-time I have reported an item it is only a "tick the box" exercise with no option to actually write anything.

I'm not sure where this is discussed elsewhere but, do a search on eBay. The Chinese are openly selling the fakes there as replica coins.
I bought some 1930 and 1937(!) pennies a few years ago to have a look at them. They cost me $7.50 each, including postage from Hong Kong. The listing showed them stamped as copies but the ones received were not stamped.

And it is not just Australian coins...US, Canada, New Zealand etc. Any really high value coins they counterfeit. Thankfully they usually don't get them quite right but (and this is scary) they are getting better. Mostly they can be picked by weighing them, especially "silver" coins which are well under genuine weight. Often they have mismatched reverse and obverse.

Plenty of mentions of these in this forum so use the "Search" option and you are sure to find much discussion about them.

$2 and $2 notes in UNC condition can be worth from a few dollars up to several hundred dollars each. Again depends on signature combination on the notes.
Some early $1 bundles can be worth thousands of dollars.
Ask your friend which signature are on the notes and tell him to leave the bundles intact and store them safely.
