Why don't they allow the other ones to be legally owned by an individual?

Also, why did they make gold illegal to own anyway?

Are you sure you want to risk $20?

Keep in mind investments can go up and down and you may not get back the full amount you invested.

I was born in 1985, so I guess I fit into the Millennial category. I started collecting seriously about 5 years ago.

To me, the longevity of coins is their primary appeal. Too many things are disposable, in this day and age. It's almost always cheaper to throw something away and buy new than it is to actually mend something. I don't like that, I like the old fashioned way. I like real books made with quality paper. I like solid furniture. I like leather shoes that need to be polished and resoled.

I like buying things that will stand the test of time and nothing keeps as successfully as a coin does.

However, for everyone like me there will be someone who is the exact opposite and thinks we should do away with coins altogether.

Buying coins is good and realistically the only way to obtain many coins is to purchase them, especially if they're old or precious metal.

However, to me the real fun and satisfaction comes from collecting coins in circulation. Even though they are virtually worthless, my collection of decimal pennies from 1971-present is one of the best things I've done for my collection.

Librae, solidi, denarii.

Even until 1970 we still abbreviated pennies with the letter "d"

British history. Excellent.

Relatively few, it seems.

I possess several hundred coins of various kinds but only a few dozen of them are of any interest to me. Gold and silver obviously and my complete collection of decimal pennies (1971-present)

"Really a dumb choice, that Brexit. And the first promise by the 'leave' campaign is already broken: there will not be £350 million for NHS, Nigel Farage said this morning."

Blame the older generation. The ones aged 45+

They're the ones who mostly voted to Leave.

Gold is up.

Sterling took a hammering this morning. Stocks markets down a few %.

That's Brexit for you.

Yuck, I really don't like them.

One of the things I love about coins is their longevity. You never know when you might have a coin that could last 1,000 years or more. Painted coins by definition won't last long. The paint will degrade and crack and eventually fall off.

Wow....I'm loving these old English coins. Really impressed, actually.

I wonder if anyone will have some from before the Norman Conquest?

Friendly suggestion:

Can people make sure to give the name of the country together with their coins? It adds to the interest, for me anyway.

Since we're now delving deeply into history can I ask (purely out of interest) that people specify the country their coins came from along with the modern equivalent.

I'd like to see someone try to justify coins as anything more than a wildcard investment.

This will be the last coin I post. I have nothing pre-1700.

1797 "Cartwheel" penny

Such a ludicrously big coin (28.3 grams, diameter 36 millimetres) I can't believe they made 700,000 of them. Then again, it does make them easy to come by.

Depends what you mean by "collecting"

Ever since I was a child I held onto small amounts of foreign currency from various family holidays. Does that constitute a collection? Or is it simply good sense to hold onto money that you may be able to spend some day?

There's a joke I once heard that every man has a drawer which contains things he believes he needs: lightbulbs, batteries, instructions for old appliances and foreign currency (Francs, Drachma, etc).

I desperately want to add a Guinea to my collection but they're so expensive, even a half-Guinea.

Anyway, here's a 1758 shilling:
