Personally, I would start with Haxby, figure out what you like, then dive into the various years of chareltons.
Haxby has a nice broad coverage of multiple areas. Older chareltons dive deeper into certain areas like silver dollars, large cents etc depending on the year.
I have haxby and 4 years of chareltons. Ignore the pricing in either book, they are overly optimistic and if you purchase at that price, you will likely be significantly overpaying. Coinsandcanada website is a great resource for current prices, when you use realized auction prices (not the generic tables of prices). This forum is another great resource. |

Good luck witht the sale.
You might want to pull out all the X for X and take to your bank. I don't they they sell for any premium and any dealer would probably want to buy them at a discount or factor that into the total offer.
Royal Bank took all mine back without issue, though you might have to chat with a more senior person. |

Thanks for posting those Terryt and chadcoins. Same box as mine the little sleaves are same as well, we're stapled together as well.
Chadcoins box looks more rectangular, mine is square. @pacific might know more about different boxes, he helped with mine.
Coins were decent shape, no pl or sp, I think my dollar came back a ms65, don't remember if I sent others in. |

I'm still let's call it "amazed" that PCGS straight graded so many of those coins. Given that a normal collection would receive details grades for much less.
I bought a 1948 dime 2nd hand attributed to the cook collection (not cleaned). But was sad to watch that auction and the damage done.
Glad you were able to such a rare piece and at quite the discount, compared to previous sales, but sadden3d why it was much cheaper. |

Definitely looks after market and I don't think I have ever seen the Mint issue some that identifies the types. In addition, it lacks any indication that it was from the Mint.
Great news on 1965 Sp dollar, a tougher one to find. Photos would be great.

Would artificial colour be spotty like it is (ie. not a uniform application across the coin)? It looks like some toning that follows the design elements. Never heard of either product, but good to know what they are, will be interesting to read up on them.
Could also be long exposure, light type/source and or nearby background material. I've played around with this on some silver coins and the camera will intensify some colors based on exposure length. Does the colour show the same in hand (depending on light/angle) or is it mainly visible on photos.
I like the look of the coin, nice find. |

It is a great question. I really like the look of some lowballs, but those were a bit too worn for my taste and the color was meh. Which I guess is why they got the details label.
I would like to build a type set of G's, where everything is visible, but evenly worn and has nice contrasting tone. One day I will get around to seeing what I have and what to fill in.

I would agree that it is not a good start. Ef 40 seems about right, but there shuld be a giant details/harshly cleaned note on the label. Seller even describes coin as being in excellent condition, which is not very accurate.
Will be curious to see more, ICCS is notorious for net grading cleaned coins with no note. As for PCGS, I will say "Cook Collection", when talking about details coins. |

Charleton has a nice variety on large cent varities in 2011 you can usually pick one up on ebay or some local coin shops. A few posters on this site also have extensive volumes on different aspects of large cents as well. Depending on your area of interest, there are a few different resources. I really like the haxby book as well for general references, etc... |
