For some reason this date has been quite elusive despite being listed as common by Peck. A couple detracting marks on the obverse, but the reverse looks to have been protected for the long haul by being in contact with a cabinet tray, allowing for trace mint bloom to remain. Strike was a bit soft resulting in poorly defined area of Britannia's shield and laureate. Not a bad lower grade example and definitely appealing in hand.

I knew that about the SC indicating it was an As, so did the folks I showed this to. The problem is that this coin is significantly thinner, and I find it hard to believe someone would be fooled by it. Also, the antoninianus was new, is it not possible counterfeiters weren't wholly aware of what they were doing? These were the same questions raised by the collector/dealer I showed the coin to. I'll look online for any images of contemporary Caracalla bronze imitations.
For reference. This coin is approximately 0.5mm thick The other Caracalla As I recently posted, is about 3mm thick. The difference is enormous. |

Caracalla bronzes aren't easy to come by, and this type is even more of a challenge to locate. It is a bit rough, but overall the details are strong.
RIC 490. VICT BRIT TR P XIIII COS III
A bronze As to commemorate the conquest in Britannia, and a nice complement to my set of denarius with the same theme.

At 2.9 grams and 23mm this coin is very thin. It matches RIC 415c for legends and design, but not the weight. I have shown it to a couple folks, nobody really knows what it is, best guess is that it is a barbarous imitation/counterfeit with a possibility it was originally silvered to pass as an Antoninianus as it is roughly the correct diameter. Anyone else have any thoughts? It is a great mystery coin!

Fantastic informational presentation. The mint that sticks out the most to me is Arles, the portrait is the most "odd" looking. After that the Thessalonica with chignon (RIC48) is most interesting, as it doesn't follow any of the other pattern busts out there. I wonder why? Did it have a special meaning?
I noticed you also do not have an example from London. I am on the hunt for that one, one of the few rulers I don't have that had coins struck in Britannia. |

Quote: Nice. Are you collecting mints? I have a preference for La Rochelle, Bordeaux and Bayonne.
I wish, it's hard enough to find one of each type, let alone year or mint.
I don't really focus on the silver, but I make exceptions during Napoleon's reign. The copper from the pre revolution monarchy's are really my focus.
Cool piece of numismatic art you have there! |

Copper coins from the reigns of Louis XIV XV & to some extent XVI are very difficult to locate, but even more so in decent condition. Has anyone else attempted to collect coppers from this era? Simply putting a type set together has proved difficult.
1774-H Sol. Grade is atypical, typically not found this nice, but the overall condition is typical with debris encrusted on the reverse.
