Gold/Silver Ratio - 77. Normal?

I have read about the ratio every once in a while. Best argument I've heard to track the ratio is not necessarily to get best prices (buy low sell high kind of thing), but more to increase the quantity of precious metals over time regardless of price.
Example: buy silver now at around 70... assuming this is a high end of historical trend AND the trend will eventually revert to its mean... you then sell/exchange silver for gold... repeat process and exchange gold for silver when ratio goes up again... repeat over and over to increase ozs, again, regardless of price.
This, to me, seems like a long position game and needs decades, discipline and patience to probably to play out in one's favor.
Has anyone ever done this, with success or failer? I'm young and have time for the long play and it always seems intriguing. I mostly collect silver coins that have too high a premium for this, but I do have a little generic silver for portfolio diversification... and will get more. Just wondering if maybe with the long position I should consider not just price, but also timing in regards to the ratio.
Thoughts!?!? |

Wanted to share my first new 50 Pesos not that I got from the grocery store last week. I've lived in Argentina for a year now and just about nobody here ever talks about Las Malvinas (at least with me, haha). Anyway, not the best pictures... sorry. If I get a pretty note I'll whip out the dslr and get a better pic if interested. I do really like the Guacho on horseback. Huge national symbol that's a lot more fun than some island's in my humble opinion .

Yup, thanks for all the work and the consistency of your philosophy. I strongly believe the latter is a major key to success by maintaining the discipline to not deviate emotionally.
Anyway, I have a question. I'll preface it by saying it is one of speculation. However, it's been on my mind for a long time and I ponder for your perspective. I know speculation is not your cup-o-tea, but whatevs.
I personally believe, based of my own study and interest, that a bubble exists in the world's major equity markets. I believe it is going to burst. Only hindsight will declare the "catalyst" (whether it be junk bonds, China, or greece etc. I don't know, but I see things as overvalued and primed to revert to a historical mean).
Now, I have been waiting all year to buy coins for my collection watching with nothing but side action. I'm tempted to go ahead and make my purchases as I fear a crash in equities will lead to higher demand in prices for precious metals.
So I get to my questions... 1. How do you perceive my madness? haha ;) 2. How would you expect PMs to react to a rapidly declining equity market? 3. Could global volatility bring lower prices to PMs during initial downward m trending of equities? Or could it be the opposite?
Thanks again, just seeking some perspective in a complicated world ! ! |

Lunar Series II - How Many Are Collecting These?

How important (or not important) is it to purchase at the release date. I figure it may have to do with the drop in PM prices; but for instance, the 2014 (with a little over two months left in the year) the price of the horse has a significant price over the 2015 sheep. Do prices rise throughout the year? Or is this because of the price drop in PMs? I am just wondering because I am for sure going to get the 2014 horse ASAP, but am wondering about the ability to hold off on the 2015.
Thanks again for all the quick responses. I'm not sure why it took me so long to find this series! I was never really a huge fan of most lunar series coins, but the consistency and quality these seem to produce every year truly seems special!

Thanks for all the info! I'm sure I am in for some consistent fun (and yearly too!) :). My only remaining question is about the 1oz proof version. I had actually already looked at the Perth Mint mint age statistics as well as completed listing on eBay. What I'm really wondering about now is the quality and/or difference of the proof version on the series. Also, with their annual fixed 5,000 mintage limit, they seem a sure bet for being in shortage as time moves on. Hard to know exactly, and the premium is steep for the proof.
Thanks again hu5kers and Saving Silver Man! I'm excited just know I'll have one of these in my hand eventually :) Vesper |

So, I am really wanting to start collecting these. They just look to be fantastic designs every year, interesting size choices with mintages that appear desirable. And well, I too am just a sucker for a pretty coin with an animal on it :). Anyway, I was wondering what others thought about all the different choices in the coins. I am looking more closely at the 2 oz, 1oz BU, and 1oz proof. Its hard to really know the difference in look and feel of the coin on the internet, so I was hoping to get some first hand accounts from other. I know someone mentioned the appreciation value may be higher on the 1/2 and 2 oz options... didn't seem to find any huge confirmation of this in basic eBay searching. Well, either way I will jumping on the Lunar Series II bandwagon soon once I decide on my purchase. Thanks for the introduction to another series CCF!
All the best, Vesper

I think they are pretty neat! The premium over spot is pretty high if you just buy one, but it is typically normal for premiums to rise as denominations get smaller. However, it doesn't outrageously priced (especially for buying the entire sheet of 25). I'm definitely considering "dipping my toes" into gold purchases with these new coins from RCM.
I'd love to hear more opinions on these little ones too!

I'm a big fan of the current ATB program and will be looking to add some of the 5 oz coins to my collection. I have personally visited a few of the national parks that are represented and look forward to picking them up one day, hopefully soon. However, I find them beautiful and wouldn't want to let them go for personal sentiment. They are something I will want to keep for a long time, even though they may be easier to sell a certified us mint product.
I went ahead and purchased a 5 oz JM bar. Engelhard was not available at the time. They seem to be selling out fast at the 5 oz weight. Anyway, I decided agaisn't the highland mint bar. I do find it to be attractive, but opted for the JM bar. As it is no longer minted at that weight since the 1980s, it seems to be a solid choice being recognizable and easy to sell with a certain accepted collectibility attached to it.
Thanks again for all the replies, I'll do my best to get up pictures when I have it! |

Libertad, the is for the pics. I think one of the reasons I'm going for a bar is so that if I ever DO want to sell some silver a bar would be an easier option and nice to have if that time comes. However, I do want some ATB 5 ozs added sometime to my collection. I just know that I'll pick ones of parks I actually have been to, then those will become too sentimental and very hard for me to sell. But, those will be numismatic purchases and ones I really want to keep for a long time. |

Thanks for the responses everyone! I have been leaning toward the Engelhard 5 oz available from apmex. It is around the same price is what eBay sold listings are going for. Been doing a bit of research and the highland mint seems pretty legit with their bullion even though they specialize in professional sports coins and trophies.
I don't really foresee the moment when I will want to sell... I am young and plan and buy only things I can afford and wish to keep indefinitely. However, the ability to resell is important just in case. The resell market seems nonexistent for the highland mint 5 oz walking liberty. I do really like the bar and may pick one up one day, but for my first 5 oz I think I'm feeling the Engelhard.
And as for the ATB... Will be getting one of those too, hopefully soon :)
Thanks again, Vesper |
