John M. Mercanti served as the 12th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 2006 through 2010, but his career as an artist, sculptor, and engraver spans far longer.
His heraldic eagle is seen on the reverse of the Silver American Eagle to this day (the obverse bears a portrait of Adolph A. Weinman's Walking Liberty design as first seen on the half dollar in 1916). The American Silver Eagle has since become one of the world's most popular and beautiful bullion coins. Mercanti's designs appeared on several commemorative coins during the latter half of the 1980s and early '90s, including the 1986 Statue of Liberty Centennial silver dollar, 1989 Congress Bicentennial $5 gold half eagle, and 1990 Eisenhower Centennial silver dollar. In 1997, Mercanti's artistic talents were tapped for the obverse design of the Statue of Liberty on the American Platinum Eagle coins.
By the time Mercanti resigned from the US Mint, he had designed and engraved more coins than any other engraver in the history of the United States Mint.

Pope Francis' Visit to United States Commemorated on Half Dollars
Out of more than 4 ½ million John F. Kennedy half dollars produced this year by the United States Mint, no more than 500 will be counterstamped to commemorate the historic visit by Pope Francis to Washington DC, New York and Philadelphia from September 22-27. This will be done by stamping the reverse of each brilliant uncirculated half dollar with a specially prepared die that features Pope Francis' Coat of Arms, with symbols referring to the Jesuits, the Holy Name of Jesus. The Virgin Mary, and Saint Joseph; also featured is the Papal miter, the crossed keys of Saint Peter, and Pope Francis' personal motto: Miserando atque eligendo (Latin for "By giving mercy and by choosing").
Now, inspired by Pope Francis' messages in behalf of the earth and the poor, Wacks has made his first counterstamped coins in over 30 years--and the very first piece has been presented to His Holiness Pope Francis.

Design
Designed by Canadian artist Claudio D'Angelo, your coin features a pair of Bald Eagles by a rocky shoreline of a vast flowing river. About the Lifelong Mates
The amazing bald eagle is Canada's largest bird of prey and the only eagle exclusive to North America. A potent symbol of vision, power and stoicism. The bald eagle does not reach reproductive maturity until its fifth year of life, at which time the eagle seeks a mate that will likely become its life partner. In some instances, mated adult eagles will seek a new partner if one of the pair leaves the region or dies, or if the pair have difficulty reproducing.
The mating process begins with courtship, which is an amazing sight to behold for lucky onlookers. The courtship "dance" is a display of amazing partnered aerodynamics as the couple swoops, dives, spins, wheels, locks claws, chases and calls to one another in full flight high above the ground. Once mated, the pair seeks a nesting spot. Most bald eagles in Canada, concentrated particularly on the Pacific Coast, choose broad, tall conifers near the ocean or another large body of water. Those without access to trees will nest in cliffs or other elevated and isolated natural features. The region immediately surrounding the chosen nesting spot becomes the pair's defensible hunting and breeding territory.
Together, the couple tackles the considerable task of nest building. Bald eagle nests are massive structures of branch and twig averaging several meters in diameter and a meter deep. The nests become firmly established for this long-lived bird, which adds new material to the nest each year. Some eagle pairs will build more than one such nest within their territory, and will alternate their usage from year to year. The female will lay her one to three large eggs on a soft feather-lined divot in the center of the structure.
In Canada, large bald eagle populations are concentrated along the Pacific Coast; however, stable smaller populations are also found across the Prairie Provinces, in Northern Ontario, on Cape Breton Island, and in Newfoundland-and-Labrador. At-risk populations are still found in Southern Ontario and New Brunswick. This coin is a beautiful addition to any collection featuring fine artwork, natural images, native species of Canada; or a thoughtful gift for nature lovers and art aficionados.
