I agree that the best way to store these is in rolls. That keeps the coins from scratching each other. At the very least get some paper rollers from the bank. An added benifit is that you can organize them easier. All that being said, I've got a few canvas mint bags full of wheaties.
Regardless of how you store them desiccant is good to have in your safe, tub, or box with your collection. The kind that you can 'recharge' or dry out in the oven is best. They usually change colors when they need recharged. |

This week I picked up four albums at Hobby Lobby that were marked down to less than $2.00. These are not folders, but Whitman and Harris albums with slides on the front and back of the coins. They were in the "clearance" area. I got washington quarters and silver eagles but they also had a few different morgan albums and a few others. |

Quote: That's a nice find and the next strap would have been good as well (88).
If it was me, I'd drive back to the bank and ask if they have it. They might still have it in the vault. If its not busy, they may even be willing to look around a little. |

As you can see there is a lack of interest in not only Canadian silver, but foreign silver in general. That is not only true in on-line forums, it is also true in general as you start paying attention at auctions, antique stores, and even in coin shops and coin auctions.
I have a local coins shop that lets me dig through her box of Canadian (which includes pre 1920) and buy it for spot (calculated at the 80% purity) before she ships it off to the smelter. Everything from G2 to BU coins. That is a very economical way to build my collection!
About a year ago I picked up over 5 ounces ASW in foreign silver at a local coin auction for $13. At an antique store a few months ago I bought a tin of foreign coins for $3. It had $2.10 face of Canadian 80%. Yesterday I bought a 1936 German 5 mark at an antique store for $2. Earlier this year I bought a box of foreign coins and currency for $100. I traded the currency for nine 64 Kennedys($100 spot at the time) and kept the 7 New Zealand and Australia silver florins.
Yes, my recommendation is to STAY AWAY from foreign silver - its just not worth the hassel and it costs too much to ship.
And don't fool yourself, the gubment will do whatever they want. |

I have a few boxes of 1972P Ike's that my grandfather gave me. I opened one up so I know its a 72P. I assume they all are.
The box is 4"x4"x.25". Plain white except for "24216-1" (all boxes have this same code). The tape is white with black lettering that says "Security Seal Tuartape".
Inside there is a cardboard boarder to hold the coins in place. There are 12 coins, arranged in 3 layers of 2x2 coins.
Anyone ever heard of this? Is this a U.S. mint product or was it packaged by some other company? If its genuine, any idea of the value?

I would like to trade some of my duplicates to fill holes in my collection.
I have a pretty extensive list of duplicate world coins that I would like to trade. This also includes some tokens, but not a lot.
I have a separate list of US and world silver coins that I would like to use to fill some holes. I would like to trade ASW=ASW.
I have bulk coins if you would be interested in trading by the pound.
I can email you the spreadsheets.
What am I interested in? If I don't already have it, I probably want it.
I collect coins by country, denomination, date, and mintmark. I love anything fro Canada and Mexico. Of course US coins, and tokens, If it is round and metal, and I don't already have it, then I am interested in it.
I prefer to trade in the US, but I'm open to other offers if the postage won't be too high.

I know nothing about the coin, its value, or how it would be placed or removed from the bowl. Assuming there is nothing extraordinary about this coin, if it was me, I would leave it as is. The coin is already ruined, so you might as well put the bowl to good use. That is an awesome bowl to throw your pocket change and keys into.
Granted if it is worth a bundle, I would have another opinion. |

Quote: wow...at 22 I feel that I am very uneducated when I listen to people on these forums...i hope one day I will be as knowledgeable as some of you here on the forum....i understand what everyone is saying about China and other countries embracing the idea of PM's as great investments.....but what does this mean in the future?....are you saying to forget 401k plans and invest your retirement in pm's or would you balance it and do a 50/50 or more unbalanced as to 25/75....im very interested in everyones opinions and i'd love to stay ahead of the game with my investments.....currently I have a 401k building by $200/month and a PM stash growing by about $150-250/month.....am I going the right route or do you guys think the pm's will be a much smarter way to go?....just curious due to the fact that the information I've read above is very fascinating and scary at the same time........
Flook -
First off: congrats on building your retirement at 22! You are well on your way to an early retirement. Over the next few years you are probably going to have additional 'needs' (mortgage, mouths to feed, car payments). Do not loose focus on your retirement. Starting early is the key, the longer your money has to compound, the early you can retire.
Secondly: Do not wait until 'some day' to become knowledgable on the market. Do it now, the faster you learn, the earlier you can retire. Read up on it, take personal finance classes, check at a local university, etc. Never stop learning.
Thirdly: PMs and other hard assets are an important part of your portfolio. Your PM stash and your 401K (among other things like your house) are part of the same thing: your savings for retirement. Diversification is critical. You should be diversified in what you invest in (stocks, bonds, hard assets, cash, etc), where your investment is (domestic stocks, international stocks, developing countries) and what types of businesses (energy, pharmacutical, staples, etc).
At your age, you should be in riskier investments (remember risk and return usually are related). You can handle the big swings (and big payoffs) because your retirement is so far away. As you get closer to needing the money, you will be shifting your assets into 'safer' investments.
As you will learn, having 50% or even 25% of your savings in a single vehicle (like silver, or savings bonds, or the stock of your employer) is not diversified. (Think Enron, Bernie Madoff, or the Hunt Brothers). I pray you learn this lesson in theory and not by experience.
Keep up the good work, do not wait to invest, stay on top of the market and your investments. Its not rocket science, anyone can do it. |

Quote: I feel this is going to be addicting! You are correct, it is horrible!
Quote: I'm sad the notes are getting stamped. From what I gather most people who follow this Where's George trend aren't into the collecting aspect of currency and could likely ruin an otherwise collectable note. It's being defaced. It's like finger painting in bright pink on the Mona Lisa.
From my experience most of the georgers are very into the collecting aspect. There have been a few cases where some goof ball stamped a valuable bill, but for the most part they look at the serial number of every bill they pick up.
As a matter of fact, many bills that would have a significant collector value because they are old or have a good serial number (like solid bills or very low bills) can not be entered on the website.
Putting a stamp on a dollar bill is nothing like finger paiting on the Mona Lisa. It is like putting a penny in a penny smashing machine. Yes the bill/coin has lost all value to a collector, but there are so many of them (and more being made every day) that it doesn't matter.
Quote: If the banks does not take / accept the note your only choice is to send it to the BEP for replacement.
Actually the other choice is to spend the bill in a store.
Quote: One branch of The Bank of the West turns in any bill stamped with wheresgeorge as mutilated so they are taken out of circulation. I'm pretty sure some of the other banks do the same.
Keep in mind that when a bill is sent to the Fed in the mutliated pile, it does not always get shreded. The bills that are sent to the Fed are shreded if they are unfit to be reissued. A machine scans them to see if they are too dirty, too limp, torn, etc. A red stamp in a margin does not cause it to get shreded. A whole bunch of stamps on both sides, probably will, but if the bill can go into a vending machine, it probably will not get shreded. |
