Quote: midross as far as their reputation goes it has nothing to do with a comment ..Ex: I bought a coin that was in a US slab top guys ..It said lightly cleaned, but the price was right. I sent it to the first Canadian grading service to re slab..The comment was totally different ( harshly cleaned )? as was the grade ..So again I resent to the other to have it in hard slab. grade was half point higher than the other but the comment was whizzed ? so this is why I have a problem with comments ..They seem to differ and yet NO ONES reputation was harmed hahhaha only my coins was so to speak......
A TPG offers an opinion. Different graders see things differently. Happens all the time, hence the people playing the crack out game, hoping for a higher grade. You did it and didn't like the results. Too bad but that's the chance you take.

I'd say a strong VF with a couple of rim dings on the reverse. Personally I don't think it a bad looking coin, opinions of other posters notwithstanding. As noted, 1948 dollars are not hard to find, particularly circulated examples. If you can get it at low VF money, go for it. |

Quote: Fellow posters , I think Art is seriously talking himself into buying a problem coin. To answer your question Art yes I have seen and owned much better in 1885 25 cents. In the last year have sold a no problem original ICCS VF 20 and a pretty light grey original raw F 15. Generally speaking when we talk about cleaned coins we mean abrasively cleaned not dipped or soaked in sudsy ammonia. This coin does have evidence of abrasive cleaning from the pix. It is in no way a premium example. If you want a nice 1885 wait! They do come along. Patience is a virtue in numismatics. Have fun and remember one little snippet of advice when it comes to RARE coins, pleasing examples will not only make you happy, when sold it will make the next owner happy as well. Problem coins just make you miserable in the end.

ICG is usually pretty good on circulated coins. Unfortunately, there was a time they wildly over-graded MS coins and it damaged their reputation. I don't know if they still over-grade but I wouldn't deal with them as I prefer NGC. |

Why are you so invested in your opinion of this coin? If you like it, buy it. I would pass on it except at a VERY low price. You seem to think it was lightly rubbed. That's your opinion and you are certainly entitled to it. I think it was harshly cleaned and obviously so. That's my opinion. The fact that there aren't nicer ones on eBay doesn't change the fact that this is a problem coin and will always remain so. |

Quote: But its still a super nice example for sure. Maybe but it wouldn't grade @ PCGS, NGC and probably ANACS and IGC. ICCS would grade it but in all likelihood would note the cleaning. I spotted the cleaning at first glance and any TPG would too. I wouldn't consider this coin to be a "super nice example" but rather a problem coin. YMMV

Quote: its could also have been silver dipped...They did this long ago to hopefully fool a merchant.. It was the same or almost same size as a quarter and if they did not pay attention the got dupped...remember back then a quarter could buy a weeks groceries... Granted - things were a lot cheaper in 1904 but I don't think you could buy a week's worth of groceries for a quarter! |
