Roman Collection Complete - Gordian II

I began my Roman Imperial collection about 15 years ago. It's been a ton of fun hunting down the coins for this collection. I just won a Gordian II on CNG auctions and this emperor really represents the last unfilled slot.

Gordian II (A.D. 238)
AE Sestertius, A.D. 238, Rome, 27mm, 16.98g, 0°, VF, RIC IVii 5 Rare.
Obv: IMP CAES M ANT GORDIANVS AFR AVG. Laureate, draped & cuirassed bust right.
Rev: ROMAE AETERNAE. Roma seated left, holding Victory and spear; S C in ex.

This collection spans from Julius Caesar to Valentinian III/Marcian. There is one legitimate emperor that is missing, Constantius III. If money were no object I would get one but sadly, money is an object so for now, I just pretend he never existed. :) I would have also liked to end this series with Marcian/Pretonius Maximus to coincide with the sack of Rome but again, money is an object.

So what now? I still have some emperors that I would like to upgrade to better examples and I will be working on that. I am also considering adding some of the emperors with questionable legitimacy such as Magnus Maximus and others. I will probably review some of these candidates and some of them may get added in the future.

Anyway, you can view my Roman Imperial collection by following the links below.
Note: the query strings for sorting don't seem to get posted on the thread correctly so you may need to sort each album by Position ascending when you click the link.

Cheers!

Looks fine to me. Some flans are porous and can give a grainy appearance.

Lucky, you are indeed correct. I was in a bit of a hurry when I was writing up the attributes on this coin.

As far as the AVGVSIVS legend, it is strange indeed and I can't find any definitive answer as to whether it is a mistake or intentional. It does appear very frequently on coins of Arcadius and appears very rarely on earlier coins such as Hadrian and Augustus.

Ha! I didn't even notice that and this coin was not listed with the legend on the sellers site so I attributed the legend myself and missed that!
