It is sad New1954. Though traditionally, the January release is the least unique/innovative of the year, I really don't see much excitement coming from most collectors in the foreseeable future. Certainly not for me and not at the inflated prices the RCM seems intent on asking.
The sticky at the top of this forum posted in 2013 is a stark reminder of where the RCM has taken us in the last 6-7 years. In 2019, can you imagine them getting so bent out of shape about design or detail leaks of coming coins? Especially now, I'd think they would be more than happy to get even a little free marketing or attention.

Interesting to note that the 'low COA' angle which was previously an Masters Club member 'benefit' is now just a marketing stretch to sell to the general public.
Yet another indication of just how poorly RCM products are selling these days. The annual report later this Spring should be very telling.
Agreed Silveroid. That thing (and the series of things) is just ill conceived and flat out ugly.

We'll never get any information from RCM but I have to believe the Canadian based coin dealers have researched the issue of shipping domestically. That is, if it now requires an agreement be in place, then they would have had to do it.
I know I have received a shipment via CP from a dealer in the past month. Also, if packages where being seized or refused for shipping we would have seen it in the news or social media.
Does anyone have a good relationship with C/A, CC&C or Gatewest that could ask one of them? Where is gatewest? He's often on this forum and must have some info.
John100 you are absolutely correct. Governments often leap before they look. |

Shipping confirmation received today from the Mint... via Purolator. Guess they aren't taking a chance with CP set to strike.
Shipping is free over $100. The set alone also ships free.
The set and a roll comes to about $115 in ON w/ free shipping which isn't cheap but my time is worth something and running around town trying to find a bank with them, or going to a coin exchange, cost something. Paying $90 to hoard a roll and $25 for an uncirculated set with both toonies displayed is ok, I guess.
Would I rather the Mint sold them at FV or close too it? Sure. Would be even better if they handed them out free.
The Mint has repeatedly said the mix is 2M colour and 1M non-colour. Finding them in change is a pipe dream. How many 2017 toonies have you found in change? For me, it's zero. Slightly better odds than lotto max.

Agreed for the most part. 10k and non NCLT means almost certainly these will be available at a significant discount in the near future. That doesn't necessarilty diminish the appeal for coin collectors.
That said, I'd expect the set would appeal as much or more to circulation collectors than NCLT collectors. I also thought we were getting away from the notion that every offering has to be flippable for a profit to be interesting. Oh well.
This is directly from the product description. "Each one is an actual test specimen. All six tokens in this set are test specimens that come direct from the Royal Canadian Mint's R&D facility, where each one was used in laboratory and calibration testing."
They are not simply cranking out a bunch of tokens using old dies.

Maybe. I have a few of the test token sets from prior years and while they had higher mintages, few if any sell now for even issue price. I got the 2012 set for 40% off from Canada Post. My bet would be the 2018 sets will lose value fairly quickly.
They are interesting though and that eBay seller is asking $30 for each token. That's a very hard ask IMO.
C/A have now sold 3 sets in three days.

Thanks for the information. I am surprised that they have 10K (60k tokens) available. That seems like a lot of lab used test pieces. Have to wonder about condition and how sets will vary.
At least one seems to be dated 2016 and another uses the Robert Bateman image of a moose for the 2012 $20 ag. Would be interesting to see that on a circulation coin.
"A glimpse of future possibilities. These are tried, tested and true examples of forward-thinking technology that could re-define future domestic or foreign coins."

Quote: The Test Token set is on Colonial Acres for VIP pre-order but not the Mint site
Thanks I'm aware that they are available but there is no mention of numbers. Also, interesting to note that no VIP discount is offered. Regardless, they've actually sold one since yesterday - I guess we know who ordered it.
Just curious of the 'mintage' given that the tokens are apparently used. I can't imagine they have a ton of them but could be wrong.
I would buy now if the the numbers are low. Otherwise I'll wait for the inevitable markdown price. |

I reluctantly ordered this set from a dealer before it went to public release and with the seller showing it 'in stock' albeit a 'pre-order' item.
They then added more stock and sold all of them. My gripe is it's been more than a month and it's not shipped and is now out of stock. I can only assume that they never had the item in stock and now have to wait for the Mint to ship them sometime late in October. Very disappointing especially since this seller charged my credit card at the time of billing. So I am now at their mercy and have to alert my CC issuer of no delivery (only have 30 days from the charge to do that). Waiting is not as big of an issue as shelling out the money a month or two before receiving the item.
It is disappointing to see the lack of engraved detail. I have heard that the Mint lost one of their most senior engravers recently and that they have been unsuccessful in finding an equally talented replacement.
Lack of engraving seems to always be compensated for by heavy frosting. |

FWIW, I ordered the colourized set too (from a dealer). I think it will show well and the 7K mintage is relatively low for a proof set so maybe it will hold it's value.
Is it odd that CC&C show the set in their new release banner but I don't seem to be able to find it for sale on their site?
I hope this is not another of their commissions with all the 'marketing' slight of hand that usually goes with that.

Did the Mint hire film director Tim Burton as an engraver? That $100 beaver coin and the $100 Portrait of a Princess coins are pretty demonic. Can't imagine HRH's eyes really look like that on the actual coin.
And it might just be me but I also see an evil clown's face in Elizabeth's hair.
