Since the majority of the coins I come across are of little value, I presume they are real since it makes no sense to go to the effort to counterfeit them as gain would be ridiculously small. Even most error coins have minimal premium value, so I presume they are real. The only time I go to any significant effort to validate would be if they should contain, or might contain, precious metals, or if they should have high value relative to their monetary value. I guess my determination of high relative value in the case of non-precious metal cons would be around $10.00.for denominations up to $5, maybe double face beyond that if buying. |

The main problem with using apps or online pricing is that you will most likely end up with values beyond what you could get in a reasonable time frame to settle the estate. I suggest that you do find a reputable coin dealer and ask what they would give you to fully liquidate them. You can then decide how to distribute them to heirs based on that and let them take their chances at either trying to sell them on their own or keeping them or liquidating them all with the coin dealer and splitting the proceeds. You will have to explain to heirs that although they might be able to get more than what the coin dealer is offering, they would have to invest time and incur the costs associated with selling them on their own, reducing what they could realize by doing so. If you are the sole heir, there should not be an issue about finding loose change laying around the house when settling the estate. |

I would open them as well. it is possible to open crimped rolls without damaging either the coins or the roller and then to manually re-cinch the roller, if you are careful, if you want to preserve the roller. Personally, I've never bought based on the apparent never-opened roll condition because it's too easy to re-roll them and, to me, I don't see any sense in paying a premium for them in the first place. They weren't rolled with any sort of extreme care to begin with and small chance of something of extreme value. |

The satin copper versions and the proofs are arguably the most valuable in this series. A scale accurate to two decimal places will be your best friend to determine the difference between the copper and zinc versions. |

I got a Celestron based on this post http://goccf.com/t/283676#2410236
I did modify it by buying the extended tube and am quite happy with it. I have used it for quick coin viewing/roll hunting. The important things, in my opinion, are to have one that comes with a fixed mounting and base so you don't have to constantly adjust the distance to coin or focus, easy to connect to PC, able to see entire coin as well as to be able to get close for minor details, and relatively small form factor. Integrated light is a plus but not an absolute if you have decent external lighting.

looks like a coin that got stuck in a washing machine see post http://goccf.com/t/454036
I yanked the ones in that post before they got too far gone. The day before, I had one that looked like thr one you posted above but didn't realize it was a coin until after I threw it away. I originally thought the one I pitched was part of a button part that fell off of some clothing. |

Looks like a T with a halo - interesting result. Only comment on the photography is that it appears the coin was not level, so the focus is off a bit in the upper right of the first two pictures. I am by no means a photography expert as most of my pictures are not works of art, so only guessing that the lens is hyper critical so a small distance difference due to the tilt is causing the slight blur. What hardware did you use? |
