NGC graded this coin a AU-53. I agree with most everyone here that it is likely overgraded and closer to an AU-50.

I was considering crossing it to PCGS with an AU-50 minimum, but will probably hold off a little while.

what are the unique about it, rarity etc.

The 1829 50c Capped Bust Half has 20 known die pairings. Of these pairings, O-118 is a R-4+ rarity.

For this year, O-120 is by far and away the rarest.

I use this helpful website: http://maibockaddict.com/1829-cappe...half-dollars

PCGS has only graded 15 of these, with only 4 AU or above.

Recent EBay cherry-pick of an O-118. I'll reveal the grade NGC gave it in 48 hours.

Any chance you can enlighten those of us not in the know, about this particular variety? Or provide a link about it?

I know there are a few books covering the series, but I use this free online guide http://maibockaddict.com/capped-bust-half-dollars.

The 1829 O-118 die pairing has a R-4+ rarity. PCGS has only graded 15 of these and only 4 are AU or better.

I was hunting on EBay and picked up the NGC graded Capped Bust half. I don't plan on removing it from the holder, so please forgive my poor pictures. And let me know if you need close ups of other areas.

I've convinced myself that this is a 0-118. Am I right?

I ended up putting a low bid on this coin after this post and won it for $490.

PCGS gave it a XF-40, which I'm happy with considering the purchase price and how generous they were on the other coins.

I had yet another expiring voucher, so I gave this coin a 24 hour acetone bath and sent it in.

PCGS said VF-35

I also used a voucher on this coin and PCGs was equally generous with a MS-64.

Again, the TrueView is through the GSA holder.

Hey everyone, I've wanted one of these forever and finally saw a decent one for my 7070 at an auction. I probably overpaid since the pictures weren't the best, but I still like it in hand.

Although the pictures don't capture it well, the coin does still have luster.

Let me know how you think it grades.

Thanks!

That's quite some detective skills. What an interesting journey for that coin.

My best guess is a strikethrough. I'll try to grab more pictures on Sunday.

A little while ago I won a set of war nickels from an auction. It held a happy little surprise, a newly attributable rim-to-rim die crack now listed on Cuds On Coins!

It is currently in a EF45 ICG slab, I am really just debating whether I return it or not to the EBay seller.

If I keep it, I would either break it out and keep it raw or send it to PCGS to add the O-110 attribution.

Thanks everyone, let me ask a slightly different question.

Do you think this is a good example for $780 (ignoring the rarity of the die pairing R4+/R5)?

Also, since Coinfrog asked, here is my attempt at some brighter images.
