I don't have my reference books, but from the top of my head I'd say VF25.

Theres something about this cent I like, I just can't put my finger on what it is.

That certainly does look like a 9.

There are only 3 Sheldon numbers for this year; S-188, S-189, and S-NC-1 (7 known).

I'm still learning old cents, and I don't have my books in front of me, but the last digit on your coin looks a little too high to match any of the sheldon numbers for this year.

Here you can find pictures of the S-188http://www.pcgscoinfacts.com/Coin/D...6131?redir=t, S-189 http://www.pcgscoinfacts.com/Coin/Detail/36140, and S-NC-1 http://www.pcgscoinfacts.com/Coin/D...6134?redir=t

I'm leaning toward this being an altered date of a more common cent. Here is an example http://www.largecents.net/collectio...799-s179.jpg

Good luck bud, I hope it turns out to be a 1799!

VF25-30 those are some great pictures!

I'd give somewhere around $40 for it.

Don't have my reference books in front of me, but at second glance I'm afraid it looks like a 1798.

That looks like a great reference to have westcoin, I'll keep an eye out for it.

I was going to get that large cent book you had listed on here, but the time on the website was an hour off so I didn't get to bid again

MeadowviewCollector:
I'd love to learn more about the colonial issues, I probly need to get a couple books on that subject as well.

Are there a lot of good pictures in the EAC grading book? I love to see some nice cents, especially the ones that I may never be able to obtain.

Westcoin:
Is the noyes book I purchased in color, or is it in b&w?

What are some books you'd recommend that won't devastate my wallet like the noyes books? It seems all books about large cents have gone up significantly in the past few months.

So in the past few months, I've spent more money on books than actual coins..

Heres the list of books I'm trying to get ahold of:

Penny Whimsy by Sheldon
United State Copper Cents 1816-1857 by Howard Newcomb
The CENT Book by John D. Wright
Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of Early US Cents 1793-1814 by Walter Breen
The Die Varieties of United States Large Cents 1840-1857 by Grellman
United States Large Cents 1793-1814 by Noyes
United States Large Cents 1816-1839 by Noyes
Grading Guide for Early American Copper Coins (2014)

Yesterday I bought the EACs grading book and today I scored a used copy of Noyes second book for $75 on eBay! I'm out of the game for a while while I recoup these funds (life of a college kid) but in the meantime I'll try to identify the variety of the cents I already have!

I can't wait for the Noyes book to get here! I've heard nothing but good things about it.

EDIT: Here is a good deal on a pair of the Noyes books http://www.ebay.com/itm/United-Stat...em1e8f54e0de

Hate to revive an old thread..

I keep most of my stash of copper pennies in these type cans in the closet.
So far, so good.

Around here, I used to be able to get the bigger .50 cal cans for $5 and the skinnier cans for $3.
You can't hardly find them under $10 anymore.

While I'm researching the Peoples Republic of China and Taiwan, do they share the same coinage?

Can't seem to find a clear answer through googling.

Grading is still not my best area, but I'll take a stab at it.

For the 3 cent I'd say F-12, and MS-62 for the Morgan, though it looks dipped to me.
