Completely agree with Pacificoin....buy the coin, not the holder.

I purchased a slabbed 1909 S Lincoln cent. Slab grade was AU58. Coin was obviously an UNC coin.

Sent to PCGS and coin graded as MS64.

Make a list of what coins are in the bags.

US 90% silver coins were produced in 1964 and prior. Dimes/Quarters/Half dollars have a dual value - numismatic (rarity and condition) AND a silver bullion value.

40% US silver coins are in the same category.

Buffalo nickels WITH dates command a higher premium for common dates than "no date" buffalo nickels.

Lincoln WHEAT cents (two wheat ears on the reverse), minted between 1909 and 1958, command a slight premium over face value - generally, 3 to 6 cents per coin, again, depending on condition. Of course, some dates and mintmarks have a numismatic value as well.

Whatever you do, do NOT take to the local pawn or coin shop until you figure out what you have.

Mint mark in wrong position? Seems there are more than one mintmark position for the gold. PCGS MS65 example has same mintmark position as the specimen in this thread. PCGS MS64+ and MS64 have different mintmark positions.

Has a book been published describing mintmark positioning on this date and mint?

Both look "antiqued".

Without seeing in hand, would have passed on both.

Middle dies state obverse die coupled with an early die state reverse die.

This is one of those coins that would grade AU62 or MS58. :)

WOW! I am close to finishing mine as well.

My selections are all over the place. I have a gold plate 1883 V nickel, and absolutely UNC with PL fields Morgan (1901 0), a fake 1916 SLQ quarter - most people don't even pause.

Have been in the same situation as well.

Simple solution - KEEP cherry picking the Morgans that will upgrade....and....trade UP! (or sell) for the flavors that you need to complete your set.

Knowledge AND experience is power.

At least you got the items back.

During a previous secret santa participation, I sent a package overseas as well. Person said they never received. Secret Santa accused me of not sending anything. Have not participated since.

Once metal has etched, the etching will remain. Sometimes attempts at restoration may improve the eye appeal, remain unchanged, or makes worse.

Of interest to coin collectors. Very old and VERY heavy safe made it thru the worst fire. Home was reduced to less than rubble. Old safe made it with contents.

BOLT the safe down. Add a layer of sheetrock, green sheet rock, or cement board to the sides and double the thickness on the top of modern safes - regardless of fire rating.

Thought about keeping the original set intact and starting another?

That is what I ended up doing.

Buffs in circulated grades really have a story to tell.

Thanks for sharing.
