For years I have seen all sorts of manner of ways to "predict" the direction of the spot market. For years I maintained it was entirely under the control of the big boys...and had my fair share of nay sayers.
These people, not just at chase but at Wells Fargo, Credit Suise and others, began to manipulate the market in........2008! You know just before the market balloned.
I remember seeing all these post about how the world was running out of silver and soon we would have $500 silver.
As an Engineer; I have/had trade magazines that tracked how much of a wide variety of metals were stockpiled by various countries. I noted time and time again how there was actually a glut of silver and gold on the market. Partially due to the collapes of the film/negative development segment of the silver market.
While there have been a few fellow travelers who sided with common sense most argued so much that I just gave it up as hopeless.
I noted that the fine on Chase is a fraction of what they made on the market.
I also note that the price of silver went UP not long after the court cases were settled.
I followed a trader on here that made some predictions and did ok, but just ok.
The truth is guessing where it is going is just that a guess.
Anyway...,my two cents. |

This is actually....well not common...but not so rare as you think; in relative terms. I have well over 600 woodies and I probably have a couple of dozen that have this graining.
You have to understand that when the plate is poured you can have pure copper; pure tin; pure zinc and varius alloys of brass and bronze. All have their own properties and as the pour cools the varius components cool and seperate at different rates.
I once did a study on rates at which woodies are found within all LWC and was going to publish my findings as well as some incidentals such as the actual mintages of SF and Denver coins ( which were only estimates in the Mint directors report) but when I mentioned it here I got a few "who cares" and I shelved the project. Literally "who cares" ( shrugs) |

This was obviously part of the coin since it was minted. Hence it can not be POST mint damage. It was probably a damaged die of some sort that was caught before it produced many impressions.
I had a jeff nickel that had the same type of damage. I'm an engineer and another engineer at my lab who was also a coin collector got into an arguement. We cut it apart in the lab and it was homogenous from the top of the feature to the other side.
Shrugs....if it is homogenous then it has to be a die error. A circular void in the die.

I'll grant that it does look like reeding...but I THINK the reeds, if that is what they are, are too far apart. In other words I don't think the scale is right. I'm more than willing to be proved wrong on this.Just my initial thoughts. |

I think the better rule is to never clean an MS or high AU with full or almost full color.
Even at that level a soft cleaning in acetone is generally fine.
Below that level it is absolutely fine.
If it is covered in crude then what you are describing is conservation rather than cleaning.
I think people go overboard to keep new collectors from rubbing their coins clean; using brasso and rubbing, ketchup and rubbing ect. In other words its to instill a fear of destroying a coin, until such time as a proper education prepares them for an acceptable and safe conservation |

I see the die markers.
The problem is that unless you have very good color vision, it is hard to see for most folks. Color differentiation is very different across the population. Things that are very obvious for a person with above average color differentiation, as opposed to those with sub optimal or even normal vision, are not so obvious.
This is a continuing problem on this forum. I'm not sure if it is a problem with pixilization or color scale. Some people post crystal clear pics while others use a sub optimal camera, or camera app. For those folks they post pics where die markers are not always clear unless you have above average color vision. For those folks that are color blind they wil be unable to see it.
As a retired Engineer, I have had to pull people off of a project because their color vision was insufficient to the task. We used to do ndt for failed components. Some people could see, for instance, a crack with their unaided vision that other team members could not. Some folks could see heat driven changes in metals, that others could not. And on and on.
I'm not sure what the solution is, other than to use the best pics possible |

We are buying at 12 times face and selling at a buck over spot. We are having trouble keeping inventory on the shelf. I just found out that the flea markets and antique malls are averaging $65 for ASEs and I was selling them for $35 till I ran out. I was wondering why I was having people drive for an hour or so to get here. One booth at an Antique mall had ASE's for $90 each.
Auctions. I rarely go to auctions because people lose their minds and will pay multiples over retail. |

It was a TPG. I'm not sure about the rest. They did sell a bit better than I thought they would. I bought them in a lot that I paid $30 USD. The lot had a silver round, a number of silver coins and some odds and ends. Basically they were free. I was more than happy with the $63 USD the group brought. |

This is why I need good photo's.
I most of these to a dealer. This particuar coin was sent in and subsequently graded AU55. Most of my coins that I submitted at the same time were upgraded five to ten points. With one being left as you kind people graded it. All my fault for not learning how to use my camera.
Thank you to all who responded |

This is going to be interesting...
I clearly see split serifs in "G" of "God" and the "s" of "Trust". I do see three distinct images in some devices.
I suspect that there will be a number of calls for MD. Your lead photo is probably your most ambigous. That will form the basis of a number of answers. I suspect many people will not look at the rest of the photos before giving an opinion.
MD is a "push" on the devices and there should be no doubling on the leading edge. IT should all be on the trailing edge(s).
Seeing a doubled image on both the leading and trailing edges is common with die deteriation doubling, but I don't see that to be the case here.
It is also possible to have both a DD and MD on the same coin. In fact it is probably more common than we think.
Because of the split serifs in at least two devices, I'm going with this being, at least, a DDO
Good luck! |

A couple of problems with Ai graded systems.
Market grading. Market grading would be gone. Completely. No more days of days of "Daddy big bucks" collector sending in his/her 1945-P Merc and getting an FSB out of a coin of questionable bands. No more downgrading coins to ridiculas grades in order to keep the census low in order to favor a big customer. I've had PCGS grade three of my coins as an AU58; that were later graded at the gem or above level by another TPG. All three were from single digit census'.
Oth how do you factor in "eye" appeal? Some people love toning. Some people love color, but not necessarilly toning in general. How about a "blast white fresh from the mint presses" finish that is generally worth a point all by itself?
I think, as an Engineer, it would not be as hard as some people think. Sure the learning curve would be a bit harsh and cause problems at first, but it is very doable. |

Flying Tiger, I can remember in the early 70s in Fallon. My grandmother and I were at the local Safeway. My Grandmother was a bit short at the register. Knowing my Grandmother the clerk was willing to just let her make it up on the next trip, but Grandmother never dealt with credit. She took a quarter back, walked up to the quarter slot machine in the lobby; deposited the quarter; and put her hand under the spout where the money came out. I swear she would have had a heart attack if she had not won! She took the money that she needed for the register and put the rest in the dollar slot and told me that whatever came out was my allowence that week! It was 20 morgan and peace dollars! I can't even imagine seeing real silver dollars coming out of the slot machines anymore! |

I have to agree, it is very easy to buy postage below face value, when buying from certain old time dealers that used to deal in stamps and have boxes of stamp sheets. I can typically get them for a quarter of face value if I buy in sheet quantity. |
